Serve as Part-Time Recording Engineer supporting the work of the School of Music Recording Studio. Record and edit student recording sessions, recitals, and concerts, and assist the full-time engineering staff with production of the School's approximately 300 events per year across four venues.


1. Record student recording sessions in the School's studios and performance venues, including session setup, microphone placement, and signal routing.
2. Record student recitals and single-camera concerts, operating recording and camera equipment independently.
3. Serve as PTZ camera operator for multicamera concert broadcasts, working alongside the Live Recording Engineer and production team.
4. Edit and master recordings of concerts and recitals for delivery to students, faculty, and the archive.
5. Set up and break down equipment for larger recording sessions, including microphones, stands, cabling, and recording hardware.
6. Assist the full-time recording engineers with day-to-day studio operations, equipment maintenance, and session preparation.
7. Communicate with students and faculty regarding session scheduling, technical requirements, and delivery of recorded materials.
8. Attends relevant production meetings as needed. Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary to support the needs of the Recording Studio.
9. May perform other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend hours required.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Working knowledge of microphone technique, signal flow, and recording session setup for acoustic and classical music.
2. Proficiency with a digital audio workstation (Pro Tools preferred) for recording and editing.
3. Ability to work independently during unsupervised recording sessions, exercising sound judgment with equipment and recordings.
4. Strong attention to detail and consistency in audio quality and file management.
5. Ability to lift and carry recording equipment, including microphone stands, cases, and cabling.
6. Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Familiarity with classical music repertoire and ability to read music notation.
2. Experience recording in a conservatory, university, or professional concert hall setting.
3. Bachelor's degree in music, audio engineering, or a related field.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Develops and implements sound production department procedures, policies, paperwork, and workflow. 2. Supervises and coordinates the efficient load-in, strike and changeover in performance venues in accordance with the published production schedule. 3. Coordinates, supervises, and evaluates the work of staff and interns. 4. Tracks developments in hardware and software; develops strategies and initiatives for acquisitions of production sound equipment. 5. Assists in establishing annual sound department budgets. Collaborates with appropriate staff and designers in establishment of show-specific sound budgets. Maintains and monitors expense budgets. 6. Attends budget meetings, production meetings, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and notes sessions as necessary. 7. Oversees maintenance and repair of sound production equipment, workspaces and theatrical venues. 8. Oversees the sound production department inventory tracking system. 9. Establishes and maintains standards for equipment use in all venues as well as mobile inventory. 10. Oversees staff in maintaining the safety and efficiency of all sound department operations. 11. Advises staff, students, and interns in the creation and implementation of safe overhead rigging for sound equipment. 12. Reviews with appropriate personnel all sound designs prior to load-ins by outside organizations using department's venues; coordinates any changeover with departmental productions. 13. Works occasional nights, weekends and holidays. 14. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of supervisory responsibility in a theatrical environment. Physical Requirements
1. Ability to climb or ascend to open heights up to 80’. 2. Ability to repeatedly lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 lbs. 3. Ability to stand for long periods.
