Job Description

Heart and Vascular sonographers perform non-invasive ultrasound in the modalities of vascular and echocardiography. They develop client relationships through excellent patient care. They act as an educational resource to clients, providing quality and value to all aspects of services.

1. Perform non-invasive vascular and/or echo testing and all duties of a Sonographer.

  • A. Follows established testing protocols. Produces highest possible quality study images & data by demonstrating competence on and proper use of all imaging and accessory equipment.
  • B. Assesses the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and educational needs, and obtains an appropriate history prior to each test.
  • C. Responsible for seeing that there is supporting information and documentation for the exam being performed.
  • D. Employs knowledge of the ultrasound technology to determine if an order revision is appropriate, and notifies appropriate individual.
  • E. Adequately explains testing procedures to patients, family members as necessary, and hospital staff members connected to the care of the patient.
  • F. Develop and maintain good relationships with clients and co-workers.
  • G. A primary responsibility of echo and vascular technologists is to review test images to check for quality and sufficient coverage. They compare patients’ most recent scans to previous results and assess diagnostic information. Vascular technologists are tasked with providing preliminary impressions for physicians and other medical professionals involved with a patient’s case.

2. Responsible for efficient provision of services:

  • A. Reports to work on time, does not abuse lunch or break periods, covers all assigned shifts and on-call, and works to ensure a collaborative effort with peers to achieve maximum productivity.

  • B. Effectively schedules add-on and emergency exams to maintain work flow.

  • C. Communicates with the patient care areas to properly prep patients, and sends for patients in a timely manner.

  • D. Keeps the assigned areas clean and ensures adequate stock of supplies.

  • E. Communicates equipment maintenance needs to the Lead and operates equipment safely and properly.

3. Follows Quality Control standards and participates in departmental process improvement activities.

  • A. Participates in Peer Review as requested and other departmental Process Improvement expectations.

  • B. Keeps up to date on new or revised testing protocols and with professional continuing education as required for licensure or certification.

  • C. Is effective in complying with annual hospital and departmental safety, education and in service requirements on a timely basis.

  • D. Attends department meetings and shares responsibility for agenda.

Education:

·High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor or Associates Degree in Ultrasound or Allied Health preferred

Years of Experience:

  • Must have at least one year previous experience performing respective modality; OR must be a graduate of or within 6 months of hire date graduation from a diagnostic ultrasound program, preferably CAAHEP approved

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written / verbal).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with hospital management, physicians and technologists.
  • Current knowledge of technology and clinical advances related to cardia and/or vascular sonography.
  • Working knowledge of accreditation, credentialing, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Basic understanding of imager configuration, DICOM standards, networking and medical records

License & Certification

  • Certification with ARDMS or CCI - Required
  • Basic Life Support certification (BLS/CPR) - Required
