0This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing diagnostic ultrasounds and reporting the findings and diagnosis to the radiologist along with providing quality patient care to our patients.
Job Duties
- Ensures that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Takes all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
- Operates diagnostic equipment.
- Produces high quality sonograms on a consistent basis following protocol
- Identifies each patient and review the patient's radiology worksheet EMR for medical information that will assist the sonographer in performing an accurate exam
- Prepares images on the PACS correctly prior to radiologist interpretation
- Understands requirements for student supervision as outlined in the Student Supervision policy for both the University of Iowa and the Mercy/St. Luke's school of Radiologic Technology
- Ensures that department is clean and all ancillary equipment is running properly.
- Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Department Specific Duties
Ultrasound/Radiology
- Ensures infection control measures are completed prior to using an intracavity probe.
Women's Center
- Completes all Ultrasound exams, procedures, and biopsies.
- Assists nursing and mammography staff as needed when time allows.
- Maintains supply inventory
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology with the ability to recognize subtle differences between healthy and pathological areas.
- Take anatomical images and recognizes normal vs. abnormal anatomy and exhibits a knowledge of pathological processes.
- Maintains current knowledge of new procedures.
Women's Center only
- Knowledge of Breast MRI and mammograms
- Ability to provide support and empathy to patients
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with members of the Women's Center healthcare team
- Strong communication skills
Professional Experience
- 1 year experience in performing ultrasound procedures preferred.
Education
- Completion of an accredited ultrasound educational program required.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification within 18 months of employment required.
- Ultrasound & Radiology: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography vascular certification preferred.
- Women's Center: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography breast certification required, and American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography abdomen certification preferred.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
- Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
