Job Description
The Solutions Design supports the front-end technical specification of DIRTT solutions on medium to high complexity projects. They ensure that design intent is translated into buildable, scalable, and profitable solutions. This role requires creative solutions to complex problems and is accountable for the quality, consistency, and feasibility of prefab designs. They serve as the critical bridge between design intent, manufacturable solutions and operational execution.
As a member of the solutions design group, the Solutions Designer utilizes design integration methods and workflows that expand DIRTT’s prefab scope potential on projects. A central focus of the role is utilizing processes that make it easier for architects, interior designers and contractors to integrate prefab DIRTT solutions into their projects. Success requires an understanding of how interior construction projects are designed, documented, coordinated and translated into prefab solutions.
The Solutions Designer must bring excellent communication skills and the ability to work directly with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop DIRTT solutions that honor design intent while leveraging efficient means and methods of construction. Equally important, this role is responsible for developing designs that have predictable downstream impacts on production design, order readiness, manufacturing, and field operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Early Risk Identification + Mitigation
- Identify, document, and communicate risks related to profitability, constructability, product limitations, site conditions, and installation complexity.
- Ensure identified risks are clearly quantified and transferred to downstream teams.
- Reduce late-stage design changes and rework by teams on the job site.
- Define clear project specific stage gates and deliverables for solution development.
- Eliminate rework loops between Commercial, Design, and Engineering teams.
Solution Design, Feasibility + Integration
- Identify and document DIRTT scope potential that aligns with commercial strategy and manufacturing capabilities.
- Develop DIRTT project specific drawings and specifications for integrating with architectural and engineering construction documents to assure clarity of scope and specification of DIRTT solutions.
- Coordinate BIM models with external design and construction teams, including design coordination and clash detection as defined by project BIM execution plans.
- Lead scope alignment and descope efforts with design teams and contractors to avoid duplication in construction cost estimates.
- Conduct scope reviews to clearly define responsibilities between DIRTT and other trades.
- Ensure all proposed solutions comply with system constraints, product rules, and manufacturing capabilities.
- Follow DIRTT design standards, guardrails, and utilize repeatable solutions to improve profitability and field execution.
- Reduce reliance on non-standard applications and custom engineering.
Revenue Quality + Margin Enablement
- Ensure solutions are optimized for:
- Gross margin performance
- Labor efficiency (manufacturing + field)
- Material standardization
- Partner with Project Executives and Estimating to align solution intent with cost assumptions.
- Proactively reduce cost escalation that negatively impacts DIRTT’s profitability prior to contract execution.
Cross-Functional Integration
- Serve as the primary interface between:
- Solutions Design
- Project Executives
- Estimating
- Production Design
- Order Engineering
- Collaborate with internal teams to align solutions with current and future capabilities.
- Ensure teams are developing deliverables that enable seamless transition from design/pre-con, to contract, to execution-ready design.
- Align upstream design decisions with downstream capacity and operational constraints.
Key Outcomes (What Success Looks Like)
- Greater than 80% of designsmove from Solutions Design to contract
- Reduction in downstream RFIs, change orders, and rework
- Improved gross margin performance vs. estimate
- Increased use of standard and repeatable solutions
- Shortened solution cycle time for document and model integration into architectural and engineering construction documents and models.
- Clear, actionable risk information transfer to execution teams
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years experience assembling construction documents for interior architecture projects within commercial workplace, education or government verticals. Healthcare design experience is a strong plus. Licensure not required.
- Proficiency in design and BIM tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, ICE, SketchUp, and Bluebeam.
- Strong understanding of design and construction processes and prefabrication methods.
- Ability to translate complex project documentation into clear, buildable DIRTT solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation of designed solutions to external stakeholders.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in preparing DIRTT project documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
