Job Description

WHO WE ARE

Element was founded by the team behind the Matrix protocol, a groundbreaking project redefining how the world communicates through open, secure and decentralised messaging.

The mission behind Matrix is simple but powerful: make messaging as open and accessible as email. That means giving people and organisations the freedom to choose where their data is hosted, enjoy truly private conversations, and stay in control of their communications.

Today, Element helps major organisations run Matrix securely at scale, from the French, German and British governments to international institutions like NATO and the UN.

THE ROLE

This is a hybrid role within the Customer Success organisation, combining pre-sales and technical delivery responsibilities. You will split your time approximately 50/50 between Pre-Sales Engineering (working with Account Executives to land new business) and Post-Sales .

You’ll serve as both a trusted advisor for new customers and a key technical partner for existing ones—driving adoption of Element and Matrix across high-profile institutions. You’ll focus predominantly on the German-speaking market, while supporting international opportunities as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Solutions Architecting (50%)
    • Lead the design of customer solutions using Matrix and Element’s stack.
    • Own technical delivery from requirements gathering through deployment.
    • Act as a mediator between customer needs and Element’s product roadmap.
    • Provide guidance on installation, configuration, scaling, and integration.
    • Manage scope, risks, and timelines for implementation work.
    • Help improve our documentation and internal processes.
  • Pre-Sales Engineering (50%)
    • Support Account Executives during sales cycles with technical expertise.
    • Deliver product demos, architecture reviews, and technical deep-dives.
    • Engage in discovery conversations to understand customer pain points.
    • Provide solution sizing, integration guidance, and technical validation.
    • Contribute to RFP responses and formal proposals.
    • Stay current with the collaboration and communications landscape.
    • Represent the voice of prospective customers internally.

Requirements

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • Fluent German and English (C1+)
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Strong understanding of modern infrastructure: Linux, Kubernetes, Helm
  • Working knowledge of database technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL)
  • Familiarity with directory services and authentication (LDAP, AD, OIDC, SSO)
  • Experience in technical roles serving enterprise or government clients

This is not a software development role, but the following are also required:

  • Familiarity with scripting or programming (Python, JS, or similar)
  • Familiarity with web technologies and client/server architecture
  • Familiarity with Git

BONUS POINT IF YOU ALSO HAVE

  • Familiarity with VoIP, E2EE, or decentralised systems
  • Experience working in/with the German public sector
  • Contributions to or experience with open source projects
  • German security clearance (SÜ2 or similar)
  • Knowledge of mobile platforms (iOS, Android)
  • Familiarity with mobile device management technologies

LOCATION

The team operates remotely and we are considering applicants only from Germany. Please note you must possess the right to work in Germany.

COMPENSATION

About Element - creators of Matrix

Element is a new type of communications platform.

It combines consumer messaging apps, collaboration tools and video conferencing to replace email, address shadow IT and improve security.

Of most importance, Element offers sovereign, secure and interoperable communications - all based on the Matrix open standard.

Sovereign

The end-user organisation retains complete ownership and control of the entire platform and all the data it contains, enhancing privacy and protecting against vendor lock-in.

Secure

The entire Element platform, and the decentralised Matrix open standard, is end-to-end encrypted by default. Operating across a decentralised network, Element provides resilient communications in the toughest of environments.

Interoperable

The Matrix open standard ensures Element deployments can federate with partner organisations to support sovereign and secure real time communications between multiple organisations.

How Element works for organisations

Element can be self-hosted, or delivered as a fully-managed solution directly from Element or one of our many hosting partners.

Element is the flagship app for Matrix-based communications, and is available to everyone free of charge.

Designed by the creators of Matrix and the FOSS Synapse homeserver, Element Server Suite is a professionalised backend that delivers outstanding performance. It includes enterprise-grade features such as powerful admin control, advanced identification and access management, auditing and compliance.

Who uses Element?

Customers include NATO ACT (using NI2CE Messenger, an Element fork), United Nations, US Department of Defence, the French government (Tchap, an Element fork) and Germany's Armed Forces (BwMessenger, an Element fork).

The importance of open source

Element (and the Matrix open standard in which it is built) is committed to open source. Being open source ensures transparency, improves security and drives innovation by creating a healthy and competitive ecosystem.
