More About The Role:

As a Solid Waste Technician IV at the Foxhole Landfill, you will be operating very large and complex heavy equipment, such as D-8 bulldozers, motor graders, hydraulic excavators and other equipment. The incumbent should have significant experience operating construction-type equipment, and it is desired that the incumbent be familiar with working at a modern solid waste landfill. The position will require work on rotating Saturdays, as our program operates six-days a week. We have SWT4 positions available that require a CDL and some that do not, please indicate in the pre-screen questions if you have a CDL. If you do not have a CDL and are selected, the County will provide training for you to acquire one within 8 months of accepting the position.

Position Summary

Performs responsible and skilled work engaging in solid waste equipment operation. This position, under minimal supervision, is responsible for operating technically complex equipment and ensuring safety procedures are followed during solid waste operations. This position is responsible for waste screening activities, customer service interaction and may train others within this job series.

Essential Functions

Perform load inspections on waste materials such as Yard Debris, Construction and Demolition Debris and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials

Operate a variety of equipment in the processing, collection and disposal of recyclables, garbage, trash, and/or refuse. This includes large tub-grinders, angle-blade bulldozers, front-loaders and wheel loader vehicles.

Perform complex maintenance and related care of Diesel equipment used in solid waste operations

Keep work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles

Drive semi-tractor trailers hauling materials and heavy equipment (walking floor trailers and low-boy trailers)

Assist with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools

Load and unloads heavy equipment from trucks and vehicles.

Monitor the safety of job sites and co-workers

Operate solid waste vehicles that require a CDL

Work Environment may vary based on assigned duties

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Minimum of six years of experience.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes

Licenses and Certifications

Requires County Driving Privileges

Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A or B CDL with one or more of the following endorsements, H(Hazardous Materials), N(Tank Vehicle), P (Passenger Transport), S (School Bus/Passenger Transport), T (Double/Triples), or X (Tanker and hazardous Materials).

Depending upon the area of assignment, may require a Waste Management Operators Certificate (Landfill) or Compost Facility Operators Certificate (Mulch Processing) or Transfer Station Operators Certificate, as required by State regulations and facility permit requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in the waste management field and be familiar with the nomenclature of terms, job hazards, and standard limitations of material acceptance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of

Equipment used in solid waste operations maintenance, and construction

Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this equipment

Lock out Tag out procedures

Customer service methodology, and communication with customers using disposal facilities

Safe work practices and hazards associated with work

Use of the tools, equipment, supplies, and methods used in the maintenance activities

Thorough knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations

Working knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance

Working knowledge of computers

Skills

Operating large complex Diesel and hydraulic equipment

Performing work, sometimes in adverse weather conditions

Ability to interpret written plans and permit requirements of solid waste facilities

Ability to fill our daily forms in a paper or electronic format for fuel, pre/post trip of vehicles and other needs.

Ability to train others in lower classes on the safe operation of heavy equipment

Situational awareness of job sites, changing conditions and operating needs

Ability to repair and diagnose equipment

Skilled with using tools and related equipment

Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment

Incumbents must be able to stand and walk much of their assigned shifts

The person in this position needs to move about from point X to point Y frequently

Constantly Ascends/Descends a ladder to perform duties or operate equipment

Work Environment

Works in outdoor exposed to weather conditions
