Solid Waste Driver, under the general supervision of the Foreman, drives a collection truck on a designated route, manually collecting and disposing of waste. This role involves vehicle operation, routine maintenance, issue reporting, and strict adherence to safety and traffic regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Operates a solid waste collection vehicle following an established route utilizing route management software
• Enters and exits vehicle throughout route to push/pull containers, operate hydraulic mechanisms used in collection of debris and pick up small items as needed
• Deposits solid waste items at designated location (landfill, Brazos River Authority, etc.)
• Operates tablet software designed for assigned route
• Assists neighboring route(s) when needed
• Communicates with other drivers, office staff and supervisor to report problems in the field
• Completes daily vehicle maintenance checklist on routing software tablet and documents faulty/inoperable items
• Tops-off fuel tank(s) daily; washes, cleans and maintains interior/exterior of collection vehicle, to include packer bodies, collection mechanisms, storage areas, etc.
• Performs minor maintenance on trucks to include greasing of systems, light bulbs, mud flaps, etc.
• Ensures all safety equipment is operational (flashing caution lights, camera, etc.)
• Adheres to defensive driving rules, obeys traffic laws and follow city policies and safety guidelines
• Performs other duties /assumes responsibility for other routes and trucks as assigned
• Driver assignment areas:
◦ Residential Driver: Operates a right-hand drive truck using hydraulic levers to lift containers for dumping; Five (5) 8-hour shifts per week; 7:00am-3:30pm
◦ Brush/Bulk Driver: Operates and climbs in/out of truck (2-6 steps) with every collection stop to use hydraulic overhead boom, collects brush/landscape debris, bulky items including furniture, mattresses, bagged leaves, etc. Five (5) 8-hour shifts per week; 7:00am-3:30pm
◦ Front-end Load Metal Container Driver: Operates and backs truck with every container collection; avoids overhead obstacles (power lines, roof tops, etc.) while lifting container; some areas driver will exit vehicle to open gated enclosures to collect containers; Four (4) 10-hour shifts per week; 3:00am-1:30pm
◦ Side-load Metal Container Driver: Operates left-hand truck to collect metal containers while driving through narrow alleys. Five (5) 8-hour shifts per week; 3:00am-1:30pm.
◦ Roll-off Driver: Operates and climbs in/out of truck with every haul; hooks and unhooks hydraulics, and secures loads, uses automatic tarp. Five (5) 8-hour shifts per week; 6:00am-2:30pm
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
• Six months experience in waste collections or related field
Certificates and Licenses
• Class B CDL
