Job Description

GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., has an opening for a Soils Laboratory Manager to perform and oversee soil related engineering tests in our Somerset, New Jersey office. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of project managers and/or principals on routine laboratory tests and will oversee various staff executing laboratory tests.

Primary Responsibilities May Include:

  • Ensuring laboratory assignments are executed with technical proficiency, accuracy, and professionalism.
  • Maintaining project schedules and delivery timeframes while ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Perform material testing and interpret data for soil and aggregate samples. Typical testing includes grain size analyses (gradation), Proctor density tests, Atterberg Limits, permeability testing, and organic content determinations.
  • Supervise and support laboratory staff performing routine and advanced testing procedures.
  • Assist with sample receipt, logging, inventory management and sample preparation.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with GZA’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Support GZA’s One Company philosophy by assisting with projects and tasks outside of primary responsibilities when needed.

Work Environment:

  • Primary work location is a soils mechanics laboratory environment.
  • Occasional outdoor work and exposure to dusty conditions.

Physical Demands:

  • This work will include laboratory work that will require frequent lifting of materials over 40 lbs.
  • Regular use of computers, including typing and data entry.
  • Regular walking, bending, reaching, pulling, and pushing.
  • Occasional lifting of materials over 70 lbs.
  • Occasional travel to project sites for sample pickup and related activities.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a soils laboratory setting.
  • NETTCP Soils & Aggregate Lab Technician or NICET Certification, or ability to obtain relevant certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, shifting priorities, and project schedules.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Positive team-oriented attitude and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory setting.
  • Experience with geotechnical laboratory software; experience with Geosystems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with USCS, USDA and Burmister Soil Classification System.
  • Associates degree (or higher) in Engineering, Geology, Soil Sciences, or Construction Management.

The base salary for this position may range between $80,000.00 to $100,000.00. The actual base salary and total compensation will depend on many factors, including location, candidate experience, education, professional licensure, and other qualifications.
