Job Description

We’re looking for local Software Engineers to join Westpac’s Gold Coast Tech Hub as part of our Next Wave program — a permanent opportunity designed to help early‑career technologists grow, learn, and build meaningful products at scale.

These are permanent roles with Westpac from day one, delivered through Next Wave, which combines real engineering work with structured learning, mentoring, and long‑term career pathways across Consumer Technology.

📍 Location matters

This role is strictly for candidates who are currently living on the Gold Coast

We are not able to consider candidates who are relocating, planning to relocate, or based elsewhere at this time.

About Next Wave

Next Wave is designed for engineers in the early stages of their career who are curious, motivated, and ready to keep learning in a supportive, high‑quality engineering environment.

You’ll be based in our Gold Coast Tech Hub, just minutes from Surfers Paradise — a creative, collaborative space where teams build modern digital platforms used by millions of customers across Australia.

What you’ll gain:

  • Permanent employment with Westpac
  • Structured onboarding, training, and mentoring
  • Hands‑on project work on real customer‑facing digital platforms
  • Exposure to modern engineering practices and tools
  • The opportunity to grow across different technical streams as your career develops

Ways of working

  • Onsite at the Gold Coast Tech Hub for the first few months (5 days per week) to support onboarding, learning, and collaboration
  • Transition to a hybrid working model once established

The skills we’re looking for

We’re open to a range of software engineering backgrounds and don’t expect everyone to have the same experience. You may already have depth in one area and interest in expanding into others.

Relevant experience may include:

Backend & Full Stack

  • Java, Node.js, Python, C#
  • NET / .NET Core
  • REST APIs, backend services, and microservices
  • SQL and relational databases

Frontend

  • JavaScript / TypeScript
  • React, Vue, or similar frameworks
  • Building accessible, user‑focused interfaces

Mobile Engineering

  • Native Android (Kotlin / Java)
  • Native iOS (Swift)
  • Experience building and maintaining mobile applications

Quality Engineering / Testing

  • Manual or automated testing
  • Test frameworks and quality‑focused engineering practices

We’re generally looking for candidates with approximately 1–5 years of commercial experience who are keen to keep learning and growing within a long‑term role.

What we value most

Beyond technical capability, we’re looking for people who:

  • Are curious, thoughtful learners
  • Communicate clearly and work well with others
  • Are open to feedback and new ideas
  • Want to build a long‑term career, not just their next role
  • Enjoy working in a collaborative, people‑first tech environment

Eligibility requirements (important)

To be considered, you must:

  • Be currently living on the Gold Coast
  • Have full working rights in Australia with no requirement for sponsorship, including:
    • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
    • 485 Graduate Visa (or equivalent visa with unrestricted work rights)
  • Student visas (subclass 500) cannot be considered

Why Westpac?

We’re building technology that genuinely improves customers’ lives — and we’re just as committed to creating a workplace where our people can thrive.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Flexible working and wellbeing‑focused leave options
  • Strong learning and development pathways
  • Employee banking benefits and discounts
  • Opportunities to give back through community and volunteering initiatives
  • The lifestyle balance of working in tech by the beach
