Job Description

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development in C/C++ or Rust with a focus on wireless communication technologies (WiFi/bluetooth).
  • 3 years of experience with embedded Linux and networking (TCP/IP).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • 2 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience collaborating within a global matrixed structure, managing cross-functional partnerships across various time zones.
  • Experience working with clients and keeping a user-centric view of problem-solving.
  • Experience in shipping mass volume consumer products and performance optimizations.

About the job

The Home Device Software team is responsible for developing and shipping the software that powers Google’s first-party smart home devices. Our portfolio includes Chromecast, smart speakers, Nest Thermostats, Nest Cameras, Google Wi-Fi, and smart displays—encompassing the entire smart home category on the Google Store.

In this role, you will lead and mentor a team of engineers responsible for developing and maintaining the connectivity software stacks that support home products across multiple categories. You will ensure that the Google Nest Wi-Fi stack remains optimized, reliable, and high-performing on all devices.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with cross-functional Home Software teams to establish technical roadmaps and architectural standards.
  • Deliver system scalability, security compliance, and regular feature updates.
  • Utilize a technology stack that features C++, C, Rust, G3, and Compute infrastructure alongside Google's internal infrastructure.
  • Drive efficiency by employing AI to automate routine optimizations and predictive maintenance tasks.
