Help shape how cities are designed

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to grow and develop talent across our organization in our AI-powered architecture design platform. You will spend roughly 70% of your time writing code and 30% on people leadership — managing career growth, removing blockers, and developing individual contributors. You will be working with a group of engineering managers, focusing on the health and growth of our people.

As an Engineering Manager in our matrix structure, you will be the people leader for a group of individual contributors who work on different product teams. You will combine hands-on technical judgment with thoughtful people leadership. You will mentor engineers in their growth, set quality and technical standards, and remove blockers so your engineers can do their best work. You will work alongside your people on systems that combine cloud architecture, performance-sensitive applications, and AI to support complex design and simulation workflows.

Your work will enable architects, planners, and developers to discover smarter, more sustainable solutions and gain meaningful insights into their projects.

About us

We are on a mission to help design better cities. With 90% of future population growth expected in urban areas, and construction responsible for around 40% of global CO₂ emissions, the AEC industry must evolve. Our cloud-based Autodesk Forma platform helps users evaluate design choices based on environmental impact, living quality (sun, daylight, noise), and project feasibility. We started as Spacemaker in Norway and became part of Autodesk in 2020.

How we work

We work in a matrix organization with high degrees of trust and autonomy. We strongly believe in servant leadership and shared accountability. Engineering managers work as peers in a leadership team while managing individual contributors across product teams. Each engineer has both product-team relationships and a manager relationship. To learn more about our way of working, read through our tech and product core beliefs.

Responsibilities

As an Engineering Manager, you will develop engineers across the organization while remaining a strong hands-on contributor. You will split your time between people leadership and shipping code.

People Leadership

  • Own career development and growth for your engineers; understand each engineer's strengths, development areas, and aspirations
  • Conduct regular one-on-ones, feedback cycles, and coaching conversations
  • Participate in hiring and onboarding of engineers; ensure smooth integration into the organization and their product teams
  • Remove blockers and advocate for your engineers to ensure they have what they need to succeed
  • Work with product leads and peer managers to support team health and development across the matrix

Hands-On Engineering

  • Contribute by coding and being a member of the team
  • Partner with your engineers on technical problems and decisions
  • Model high standards for code quality, communication, and problem-solving
  • Work through technical trade-offs alongside your engineers, contributing your own perspective as a peer contributor

Desired profile

  • Combines strong technical judgment with genuine interest in growing people
  • Operates with clarity in ambiguous situations and is comfortable with matrix dynamics and competing priorities
  • Recognized as a skilled engineer who writes and ships code regularly
  • Brings others along through mentoring, enabling, and fostering growth
  • Experience managing individual contributors across multiple contexts or product areas
  • Collaborates effectively with peers, product leads, and across the organization
  • Comfortable developing engineers who work in different teams and on different projects Motivated by our mission and focused on delivering meaningful impact at scale

What will help you succeed in this role

  • Strong hands-on engineering background building cloud-based, user-facing systems
  • Experience in an engineering manager, team lead, or similar people-leadership role
  • Genuine interest in developing people and creating environments where they grow
  • Comfort with matrix or dotted-line structures where you manage people who work across different teams
  • Proven ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with people leadership
  • Strong communication skills, especially in one-on-one coaching and feedback conversations Interest in applying AI in real-world products

You might also bring

  • Experience with TypeScript, serverless architectures and AWS
  • Background in large-scale systems or platform development
  • Experience working in cross-functional, international product teams
  • Track record of mentoring and developing engineers into stronger contributors
  • Experience in matrix or dotted-line reporting structures

Why join us

  • Develop engineers across the organization while staying technical — roughly 70% of your time writing code
  • Build and grow a talented group of engineers; see them succeed and advance in their careers
  • Influence the organization through people leadership and technical mentorship
  • Direct impact on real-world problems with measurable environmental impact
  • Work with experienced engineers across the organization in a mission-driven culture
  • Competitive compensation, pension, and benefits

We believe diverse teams build better products, and we are committed to creating a workplace where people can be themselves and do their best work. We encourage you to apply even if your experience does not match every requirement listed; curiosity, empathy, and a growth mindset matter just as much to us
