About the role:
The Engineering Lead is a hands-on technical leader and people manager responsible for the BAU cross-functional team in our ecommerce and registration programme delivering a defined set of products and services. This role combines deep technical expertise, delivery ownership, and people management.
The Lead is the subject-matter expert, accountable for all delivery, release planning, and technical quality within the team. They set technical direction, ensure architectural and operational excellence, and partner with Product to deliver business outcomes.
They are expected to resolve the most complex technical challenges while delegating effectively across the team. As a peer to a Principal Software Engineer, this role is accountable for engineering outcomes (quality, reliability, security, compliance, cost, and speed) and for cultivating a high-performance, inclusive engineering culture. They analyse and align product roadmaps, determine the technical feasibility of future development, and provide direction into delivery plans, schedules, risks and updated roadmaps.
Accountable for ensuring good management to oversee and continuously improve the quality, service, and efficiency of staff, products and processes. Follows and enforces necessary compliance.
Hands-on expectation: ~30–50% (coding complex features, design reviews, architectural decisions, incident leadership).
Although leading a team with a wide range of skills, this position is for leads with significant and primary expertise in front-end development.
Responsibilities:
Engineering Leadership & Culture
- Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, and applicable laws

- Provide effective line management to the BAU team
- Conduct standard HR related duties such as absence management, performance management, disciplinaries, addressing complaints and resolving problem

Product & Delivery Excellence
- Own delivery outcomes: predictability, throughput, quality, and customer value — using metrics (e.g., cycle time, lead time, escaped defects, change failure rate).
- Prioritise and manage work and release planning, capacity and dependency management; ensure delivery plans are feasible and transparent.

- Balance product growth opportunities with technical enablement (tech debt, reliability, accessibility) using clear trade-off decisions
- Serve as the front-end voice in roadmap prioritisation and discovery; ensure requirements are clear, testable, and aligned to architectural constraints.
- Collaborate with direct reports and various stakeholders to support the development and maintenance of the technical roadmap, ensuring roadmap planning is well thought out technically and will be successful
- Proactively surface risks and mitigations; manage external dependencies and vendor/partner engagement.
- Serve as the initial point of escalation for software development issues within the specific area of responsibility leading on
- Manage and encourage new ideas from team members to foster improvements through innovations
- Interface with Product, UX, backend engineers and QA to finalise requirements
- Write and reviews portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity
- Work closely with other development team members to understand moderately complex product requirements and translate them into software designs
- Ensure platform and features are compliant
Technical Excellence & Innovation
- Align with domain/platform tech leads and the architecture function to drive front-end standards, patterns, and reusability.
- Collaborate with team and domain tech leads on front-end architecture, cross-functional requirements and component design.
- Ensure sufficient & relevant technical documentation is available so that any staff can get up to speed quickly with the technical concerns of the product and services leading on
- Maintain a healthy technical estate: modernisation, simplification, deprecations; manage technical debt with a transparent backlog and guardrails, so that the technical burden is kept in equilibrium
- Provide technical assurance for the team: designs, code quality, reviews, and architectural alignment.
- Ensure security practices and standards are adopted within the team leading and acceptance criteria, with regular security testing is scheduled across all products and services leading on
- Ensure suitable dashboards are developed and enhanced to highlight technical concerns, risks and KPIs
- Keep abreast of new technology developments
- Lead system design at scale, using ADRs, C4 or similar; ensure architectural decisions are traceable and pragmatic.
- Act as the technical escalation point, resolving the most complex issues that other engineers cannot
Operational Excellence
- Ensure zero/minimal downtime deployments; enforce release readiness and rollback plans.
- Ensure continuous improvement of engineering practices and operational processes.
- Own operational readiness: instrumentation, logging, monitoring, alerts; production quality.
- Define and track quality targets; drive improvements in error rates, performance and reliability.
- Lead incident response and blameless post-incident reviews; ensure actionable follow-ups and learning loops.
- Ensure software is maintained and upgraded as appropriate.
- Ensure suitable testing is in place for all services and integrations, performant, reliable and scalable.

Requirements:
Qualifications (Experience, credentials, etc)
- Proven experience as a Tech Lead or Lead Engineer delivering software at scale.
- Demonstrable success leading and managing teams through full SDLC to production.
- Strong organisational, planning and change management skills across functional groups.
- Advanced problem-solving ability, able to lead and co-ordinate people across teams to diagnose complex issues and identify root cause.
- Experience balancing product delivery with technical investments (accessibility, reliability, debt).
- Skilled in stakeholder management and communicating effectively at multiple levels (engineers → executives).
- Experience in systems analysis, design and a solid understanding of development, quality assurance and integration methodologies.
- Proficient with AI-assisted development tools and able to critically evaluate AI-generated output before committing it
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a relevant field of work or equivalent work experience.
Technical Skills (Unique technology requirements for this role)
Required
- Expert-level proficiency in TypeScript and React.
- Deep understanding of HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and CSS pre-processors.
- Strong accessibility expertise: WCAG 2.1 AA, semantic HTML, ARIA.
- Able to define and enforce testing strategy: unit, integration, E2E, and accessibility testing.
- Expert-level understanding of modern state management and form libraries.
- Deep understanding of front-end build tooling and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong experience consuming and integrating with RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Security-minded approach aligned to Secure SDLC practices.
- Knowledge of agile software development methodologies.
- Deep knowledge of front-end performance, instrumentation, logging, monitoring and alerting.
Highly Desirable
- Experience with React Native.
- Experience building Progressive Web Apps (PWAs).
- Experience with design systems or shared component
