About the Role
The Software Engineering Intern will be responsible for validating Opentrons products through Application Based Reliability (ABR) Testing. The ABR team works cross functionally with the software, hardware, and science teams and report to the ABR lead. This role requires an understanding of both theoretical and practical engineering principles within robotics. This is an exciting position for someone who enjoys applying their theoretical knowledge to real world applications through direct hands-on testing and root cause analysis troubleshooting.
Important: The Software Engineering Intern must be available for a 6-month internship
What You Will Do
Daily usage with constant running of ABR (Application Based Reliability) test robots
Weekly calibration of robots
Biweekly or monthly updates to software across robots
Integration of new software features or new hardware modules into ABR testing
Root cause analysis of all issues within individual parts or subsystems
Documentation of all issues for department awareness and knowledge for future reference
Perform statistical analysis on robot actions and performance
Write scientific protocols using Opentrons' Python API
Write scripts to automate data analysis and collection
Creating SolidWorks models of new labware
Special projects as time allows

Experience:
Project experience highlighting ability to design, test and improve components or systems
Basic experience and intuition with linear motion, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics
Basic experience with mechanical test equipment. Able to effectively produce basic fixtures
Strong prioritization skills
Experience with Python
Experience with GitHub
Experience with SolidWorks
Bonus Qualifications:
Experience in life sciences or medical devices
Experience with XYZ motion systems or 3D printers.
Familiarity with PCBA development and debugging tools.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Work is performed in a typical interior office or lab environment
Fast-paced lab environment with a high volume of work to be completed daily
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Ability to safely lift up to 20 lbs required
Compensation: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $18 and $25 per hour; however base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as paid sick time, dependent on the position offered. Details will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
