Job Description

Technical Lead – Java & Web Platforms

About BIP

BIP is an international consultancy specialising in business transformation, technology and innovation. We work with some of the world’s leading organisations to solve complex challenges and deliver meaningful, sustainable change.

BIP xTech is our Centre of Excellence for technology consulting and digital engineering, bringing together specialists across software engineering, cloud, data, AI and emerging technologies.

We are looking for a Technical Lead – Java & Web Platforms to join our growing xTech team and lead the design and delivery of complex, business-critical digital platforms for major UK and international clients.

The role

This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining software engineering, solution design, team leadership and client engagement.

You will provide technical direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams across back-end, front-end, DevOps and QA, while remaining close to the code and day-to-day delivery.

Working across the full software delivery lifecycle, you will help shape scalable, secure and maintainable solutions, collaborating closely with client stakeholders, product teams, architects and BIP colleagues across the UK and internationally.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the technical direction and end-to-end delivery of complex web applications and digital platforms.
  • Translate business and functional requirements into pragmatic technical designs, delivery plans and engineering decisions.
  • Lead multidisciplinary and internationally distributed teams across back-end, front-end, DevOps and QA.
  • Define solution architecture, application components, APIs, integrations, data flows and deployment approaches.
  • Remain hands-on through coding, prototyping, code reviews, troubleshooting and resolution of complex technical challenges.
  • Establish and promote engineering standards across code quality, testing, security, performance, observability and documentation.
  • Guide the delivery of cloud-native, microservices-based and API-led solutions.
  • Oversee technical delivery across development, test, release and production environments.
  • Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Delivery Managers and client stakeholders to manage technical priorities, dependencies, risks and trade-offs.
  • Ensure scalability, resilience, availability, security and maintainability are considered throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Support DevOps and QA teams in establishing effective CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and reliable deployment processes.
  • Facilitate technical workshops and communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentor engineers, provide constructive feedback and support their ongoing development.
  • Contribute to project mobilisation, technical discovery, estimation and solution shaping for new client opportunities.
  • Collaborate with BIP teams and Centres of Excellence to identify reusable components, accelerators and innovative approaches.

What we’re looking for

You will have significant experience designing, developing and delivering complex enterprise web applications or digital platforms, alongside proven experience operating as a Technical Lead, Lead Software Engineer or similar.

You will also bring:

  • A strong hands-on software engineering background, with deep expertise in at least one area of the application stack.
  • Strong back-end development experience, ideally using Java, Spring and Spring Boot.
  • A good understanding of modern front-end engineering using technologies such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React or Angular.
  • Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
  • Strong knowledge of software architecture principles, object-oriented design, design patterns and microservices.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server or MySQL.
  • Experience delivering applications on at least one major cloud platform, including AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.
  • Practical experience with containerised application delivery using technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Git-based development workflows, pull requests and code reviews.
  • A strong understanding of DevOps principles and CI/CD.
  • Experience with automated testing across unit, integration, API and end-to-end testing.
  • An understanding of application security, including authentication, authorisation, secure API design and common web application vulnerabilities.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving complex application, integration and production issues.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Confidence operating in client-facing consulting environments.
  • Experience working with distributed or international teams.
  • Full professional proficiency in English.

It would be great if you also have

  • Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform, CloudFormation or similar.
  • Knowledge of asynchronous and event-driven architectures, messaging platforms and integration patterns.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, tracing and observability platforms.
  • Understanding of performance engineering, capacity planning, resilience and high-availability patterns.
  • Experience integrating digital platforms with identity, customer, payment, CRM or other enterprise systems.
  • Experience working within Agile delivery environments using tools such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Experience supporting applications through release, production transition and hypercare.
  • Exposure to data engineering, ETL, analytics or data visualisation technologies.
  • Previous experience within technology consulting or delivering solutions for large, complex organisations.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or another relevant STEM discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Relevant cloud, architecture, software engineering or DevOps certifications.

About you

You are a pragmatic technical leader who is comfortable balancing engineering quality, client requirements, delivery timelines and commercial considerations.

You will be:

  • Comfortable moving between strategic technical decisions and hands-on problem-solving.
  • Able to lead through influence and build trust across different disciplines, seniority levels and cultures.
  • Confident engaging with senior technical and business stakeholders.
  • A clear and structured communicator who can make complex technical subjects easy to understand.
  • Collaborative and supportive, with a genuine interest in mentoring and developing others.
  • Proactive in identifying technical risks, dependencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Accountable, organised and able to manage competing priorities.
  • Curious about emerging technologies while remaining focused on their practical application and business value.
  • Willing to travel within the UK and internationally where required.

Why BIP?
