Title and Summary

Software Engineer (Real Time Payments)
The Realtime Payments (RTP) program is driving the global transition toward instant, account‑to‑account payments, enabling secure, low‑latency, and highly resilient payment services across multiple live markets.
RTP platforms operate as mission‑critical financial infrastructure, supporting high transaction volumes, strict regulatory expectations, and very high availability requirements.
Engineering in RTP is focused on delivering robust, scalable, and operable platforms—balancing feature delivery with strong engineering discipline, non‑functional excellence, and long‑term maintainability in line with Mastercard’s enterprise standards.

Role
As a Software Engineer, you will design, develop, test, and support software components and features within an RTP product or platform capability.
This role is suited for an engineer who:

Works independently on defined problems and features
Applies established architectural patterns with good technical judgment
Takes ownership of code quality, testing, and production reliability
Collaborates actively within a cross‑functional team
Is progressing toward Senior‑level scope and complexity

You are expected to deliver consistently, contribute to improving the codebase and systems you work on, and operate with a production‑first mindset.

Key Responsibilities
1. Software Design & Development

Design and implement small to medium‑sized features or components based on defined requirements and reference architectures.
Apply approved architectural patterns (e.g., microservices, event‑driven messaging, APIs) correctly and consistently.
Translate functional requirements into clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
Contribute to design discussions and document implementation decisions where appropriate.
Deliver features end‑to‑end, including development, testing, deployment, and documentation.

2. Code Quality & Engineering Discipline

Write high‑quality, readable, and testable code aligned with Mastercard engineering standards.
Develop and maintain automated unit and component tests.
Participate actively in code reviews, both giving and incorporating feedback.
Identify and address defects, performance issues, and reliability gaps in owned areas.
Follow secure coding practices and regulatory/compliance requirements.

3. Production & Operational Responsibility

Build software with reliability, observability, and supportability in mind.
Add appropriate logging, metrics, and basic alerts for owned components.
Participate in production releases and operational readiness activities.
Take part in on‑call rotations or production support, as required.
Assist in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and remediation actions.

4. Collaboration & Team Execution

Work closely with Product Managers, QA, DevOps, and peer engineers.
Communicate progress, risks, and technical concerns clearly.
Participate actively in sprint planning, estimations, and retrospectives.
Act as a dependable team member contributing to delivery commitments.

5. Continuous Improvement & Growth

Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, or maintainability in owned code.
Contribute to reducing technical debt incrementally.
Build deeper understanding of RTP platforms and the payments domain.
Demonstrate growth toward increased ownership and complexity.

All About You
Experience & Technical Expertise

Typically 3–6 years of professional software engineering experience.
Proven ability to deliver non‑trivial features independently.
Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals and distributed systems.
Experience working on production systems with availability and reliability expectations.
Comfortable owning components through development and into production.

Technology Background

Strong experience with Java / Spring or equivalent backend technologies.
Experience with APIs, messaging systems, and data persistence layers.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and version control tools.
