Job Purpose

The Software Engineer II will join the Machine Health / IoT Drivers Team, responsible for developing and maintaining sensor drivers that support hundreds of equipment interfaces from multiple manufacturers.

The data collected through these drivers is consumed across Modular Mining Systems’ product portfolio, enabling a comprehensive, real-time view of equipment health, operational performance, and mine site efficiency, from the field to cloud-based solutions.

This role is ideal for a software engineer with solid development experience, strong problem-solving skills, and an interest in building reliable, scalable, and high-quality software for industrial and mining technology environments.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality, efficient, and reliable software components in alignment with industry standards and internal engineering practices.
  • Produce clean, maintainable, and testable code, applying software engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Develop proofs of concept for new technologies, product improvements, and innovative technical solutions.
  • Analyze technical requirements, estimate development work, and contribute to planning activities.
  • Create, maintain, and improve software architecture, technical design documentation, and related engineering artifacts.
  • Gain a strong understanding of Modular’s applications, platforms, and mining technology domain.
  • Collaborate proactively with product, architecture, QA, DevOps, and other engineering teams to improve both functional and non-functional aspects of platform components.
  • Support the design, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex software system components.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and support other team members by sharing technical knowledge, development practices, and domain expertise.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to team members, stakeholders, and project leadership.

Required Skills

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Programming, Software Engineering, Software Development, or a related field.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one major object-oriented programming language, such as C# or Java.
  • Demonstrated experience working across the full Software Development Life Cycle, including analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and support.
  • Experience writing testable code and using automated testing practices.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including design patterns, anti-patterns, clean code, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting complex software components or systems.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired Skills

  • Experience developing and delivering cross-platform software solutions.
  • Experience developing, debugging, or troubleshooting software on resource-constrained embedded platforms.
  • Knowledge of core web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with frameworks such as ASP.NET MVC, Spring, or similar technologies.
  • Understanding of computer networking concepts and the TCP/IP stack.
  • Experience with database development and ORM frameworks, such as Entity Framework, JPA, or Hibernate.
  • Experience working with both Windows and Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development practices.
  • Experience with modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD, automated builds, and deployment pipelines.
  • Experience with containers and related technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with message brokers or distributed messaging technologies, such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or ZeroMQ.
  • Experience with serial communication protocols and tools, including CAN, Socket, RS485, RS232, or similar technologies.
  • Interest in industrial systems, mining technology, IoT, machine health, telemetry, or equipment data integration.
