Job Description

About the Role and Team

As a Software Engineer II on CEE, you will build the systems that decide how much infrastructure Uber needs, where it runs, and what it costs. Our capacity planning platform turns business demand forecasts into resource plans, targets, and quotas across compute, storage, and data infrastructure, so engineering teams can ship without over-provisioning and Finance can trust the numbers.

The problems here are messy and the systems are global. Demand is uncertain, cost attribution spans many systems, and plans get revised every forecast cycle. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information, own your work end-to-end, and stay calm when a planning deadline or a high-load production pipeline is on the line. We are looking for engineers who think in systems, pride themselves on robust monitoring and data correctness, and believe the best solutions are built through candid feedback and cross-functional collaboration. If you're energized by challenges and motivated to move the real world, this is where you'll grow.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality code for the capacity planning stack, including resource demand-to-supply forecasting models, plan-of-record pipelines, and the services that publish and manage capacity and spend plans. The scope ranges from features of moderate complexity to projects with multiple dependencies.
  • Build and scale the data pipelines that join business demand, resource consumption, and cost attribution, balancing technical debt and shifting planning cycles while keeping long-term impact in mind.
  • Improve the accuracy and explainability of capacity forecasts and models, and validate changes by backtesting against historical data.
  • Own the software lifecycle end-to-end, from drafting design docs to debugging production issues and managing incidents independently, including keeping planning pipelines correct and on time around forecast deadlines.
  • Collaborate across disciplines, including Product, Data Science, Finance, and infrastructure platform owners, to translate ambiguous requirements into simple, elegant system designs.
  • Champion engineering best practices by providing quality code reviews, writing comprehensive tests and data-quality checks, and improving system performance.
  • Navigate internal complexity and stakeholder inquiries to unblock dependencies and ensure the reliability of our production environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend development, distributed systems, or data engineering.
  • Proficiency in one or more object-oriented or functional programming languages (e.g., Go, Java, Python, or C++).
  • Experience with data modeling, query optimization, and translating customer problems into system design.
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience writing tests to verify functionality and establishing monitoring systems to ensure code stability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with forecasting, optimization, or statistical modeling, and with turning a model into a reliable production system.
  • Familiarity with capacity planning, resource quotas or scheduling, or cost showback or chargeback systems.
  • Proficiency with Big Data frameworks (e.g., Spark, Flink) or real-time data streaming (e.g., Kafka).
  • Experience identifying and reducing code-level technical debt in high-load distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment on engineering trade-offs for complex features and to make progress in high-ambiguity environments.
  • Background in mentoring new team members and contributing to engineering culture.
  • Strong communication skills, with a track record of translating complex technical concepts for diverse stakeholders.
