Purpose

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Software Engineer with experience developing business applications in either the Salesforce Platform ecosystem (Salesforce, Apex, MuleSoft, FormAssembly) or the Microsoft application development ecosystem (.NET, SQL Server, Azure, SSIS, Power BI). This position reports to the Director of Applications and Data and serves as a member of cross-functional teams supporting faculty, staff, and students at the McCombs School of Business.

The Software Engineer will participate in the design, development, testing, integration, deployment, and ongoing support of software applications, data solutions, and business processes. The ideal candidate possesses strong software development fundamentals, a willingness to learn new technologies, and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The work involves understanding business needs; eliciting, documenting, and clarifying requirements; designing, developing, and testing applications and databases; integrating custom, commercial, and software-as-a-service solutions; and supporting continuous improvement of business processes. Strong communication skills, customer service orientation, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are highly valued.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and implement software applications and integrations to support business processes.

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain custom software applications, integrations, and services.
  • Develop solutions using technologies within either the Salesforce Platform ecosystem or Microsoft application development ecosystem.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code using established software development standards and best practices.
  • Develop and optimize SQL or SOQL queries and assist with data design and data modeling activities.
  • Develop and enhance user interfaces using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and related modern development frameworks.
  • Design and execute automated data imports, transformations, and integrations using approved tools and technologies.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing activities, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Work within established DevOps and source control processes to support software development and deployment activities.

Perform software testing, implementation, and production support activities.

  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, support user acceptance testing, and assist with production validation activities.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, integration issues, and application performance concerns.
  • Participate in software releases, enhancements, upgrades, and maintenance activities.

Participate in application architecture, integration, and technical design efforts.

  • Contribute to the design of application architectures, integrations, and data flows that support business requirements.
  • Assist in evaluating technologies, tools, and approaches that improve solution quality, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Work with University and departmental technology standards to ensure solutions align with established architecture and security practices.
  • Stay current with software development trends, methodologies, and emerging technologies.

Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.

  • Participate in requirements gathering, solution design discussions, effort estimation, testing, implementation, and post-production support.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, project managers, technical leads, functional users, and application owners to develop effective solutions.
  • Assist with requirements, technical and project, documentation, knowledge transfer, and support activities.
  • Participate in Agile and team-based development practices.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field. Four additional years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Two years of experience developing business applications or software solutions with at least one of the following:
    • Salesforce Platform development using Apex, Lightning technologies, Visualforce, or related tools.
    • Microsoft application development using C#, .NET, SQL Server, Azure, or related technologies.
  • Experience developing and troubleshooting SQL or relational database queries.
  • Experience developing web-based user interfaces using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with application integrations, APIs, or web services.
  • Experience using source control systems such as Git.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Salesforce Platform Experience

  • Three or more years of experience developing, configuring, enhancing, or supporting applications on the Salesforce Platform.
  • Demonstrated experience developing custom Salesforce solutions using Apex, Lightning Web Components, Aura Components, Visualforce, Salesforce Flows, or related Salesforce development tools.
  • Experience integrating Salesforce with external systems using REST APIs, SOAP APIs, middleware, data integration tools, or other approved integration approaches.
  • Experience working with MuleSoft, FormAssembly, or similar integration, workflow, form, or data collection platforms.
  • Experience supporting Salesforce data models, security models, user permissions, automation, validation rules, and production support needs.
  • Salesforce Certified Platform Developer I certification or other relevant Salesforce certification.

Microsoft Platform Experience

  • Three or more years of experience designing, developing, enhancing, or supporting business applications using C#, .NET, SQL Server, or related Microsoft development technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and optimizing relational database solutions using Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, stored procedures, views, data models, or query performance techniques.
  • Experience designing, developing, or supporting data integration processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Azure services, APIs, scheduled jobs, or similar tools.
  • Experience developing reports, dashboards, datasets, or business intelligence solutions using Power BI or related reporting technologies.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or supporting applications or services in Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience troubleshooting production issues across application, database, integration, or reporting layers.

Additional Engineering Experience

  • Experience supporting enterprise business applications in a production environment.
  • Experience participating in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and post-production support.
  • Experience working on data-focused applications or projects involving ETL, data warehousing, analytics, reporting, data quality, or system-to-system data movement.
  • Experience contributing to application architecture, integration design, data flow design, or technical design documentation.
  • Experience using Git or another source control system as part of a team-based development process.
  • Experience working within Agile, Scrum, Kanban, or similar iterative development practices.
  • Experience working in a complex organization with multiple stakeholder groups, competing priorities, shared technical environments, and evolving business requirements.
  • Experience supporting higher education, public sector, nonprofit, or similarly complex administrative environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new platforms, troubleshoot unfamiliar systems, and expand technical skills beyond a primary area of specialization.

Salary Range

$70,000 - $100,000 depending on qualifications.

Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
  • Works in a shared office environment. Some lifting, up to 25 lbs.
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required during peak periods and special events.
