Job Description

The role

At Ore Energy, we are on a mission to fundamentally expand the amount of energy society can reliably harness and use, helping move civilization toward a more abundant energy future. We are doing this by developing long-duration, utility-scale iron-air batteries that provide safe, low-cost, multi-day energy storage for electricity grids and data centers.

We are expanding our engineering team and are looking for a Software Engineer – Edge Systems & Embedded Security to join us in Amsterdam. In this role, you will take technical ownership of the secure software and data architectures that bridge our physical, edge-connected battery systems with cloud platforms.

You will design scalable data pipelines, secure edge-to-cloud communication interfaces, and end-to-end cybersecurity frameworks. We are looking for a pragmatic, hands-on engineer who thrives at the intersection of connected hardware, distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure; ensuring our energy storage systems remain secure, resilient, and observable at scale.

Key responsibilities

  • Edge-to-Cloud Connectivity & Gateway Software: Design and develop communication software for industrial edge gateways, enabling secure and reliable connectivity between BESS containers, battery systems, EMS/SCADA systems, field devices, and cloud platforms. Develop scalable solutions for collecting, transmitting, and managing operational, diagnostic, and performance data using industry-standard communication protocols.
  • Industrial Communication & Security: Develop secure communication solutions using protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA and MQTT. Implement secure authentication, encryption and certificate-based communication to protect connected systems.
  • Cybersecurity Architecture: Design and implement cybersecurity features across embedded software, industrial edge gateways and cloud-connected systems. Promote security-by-design principles throughout the software development lifecycle and ensure communication channels are resilient against cyber threats.
  • Remote Management & OTA Updates: Develop secure solutions for remote device monitoring, diagnostics, configuration, provisioning and over-the-air (OTA) software and firmware updates, including reliable update and recovery mechanisms.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other engineering departments to develop, validate and deploy communication software for next-generation Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Your profile

  • Experience: 4+ years of hands-on software engineering experience in edge-to-cloud systems, cybersecurity and IoT platforms connected to physical devices.
  • Software Engineering: Strong programming skills in Python and C/C++. Experience with Go or Rust is considered an advantage.
  • Industrial Communication: Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, MQTT, IEC 61850 or IEC 60870-5-104 and a good understanding of communication architectures used in industrial and energy systems.
  • Embedded & Edge Computing: Experience developing software for Linux-based embedded devices, industrial PCs or edge gateways is highly desirable.
  • Cloud & Connected Systems: Experience connecting industrial or embedded devices to cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud for remote monitoring, diagnostics and device management.
  • Cybersecurity & Secure Systems: Good understanding of secure communication concepts including TLS/mTLS, PKI, authentication, digital certificates, secure firmware updates and secure software design principles.
  • Domain Knowledge: Experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), renewable energy, power conversion systems, industrial automation, automotive or other critical infrastructure is considered a strong advantage.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams. Excellent written and spoken English.

About Ore Energy

Ore Energy is developing the next generation of long-duration energy storage to enable a fully renewable power system. Our iron-air battery technology stores electricity for up to 100 hours, making it possible to keep grids running through multi-day periods of low wind and sun.

Unlike conventional batteries, our systems use abundant, non-toxic materials: iron, air, and water. This makes them safe, cost-effective, and scalable without relying on scarce minerals or fragile supply chains. When charging, the battery converts rust into metallic iron. When discharging, it reverses the reaction, consuming oxygen and producing rust again. This simple, proven chemistry has the potential to deliver energy at a fraction of the cost of other storage technologies.

Founded at TU Delft in the Netherlands, Ore Energy is focused on real-world deployment. In 2025, we connected the world's first iron-air battery to the grid in Delft. This milestone demonstrated that multi-day storage can be integrated directly into modern energy systems.

As countries expand renewable generation, the challenge of balancing supply and demand is becoming urgent. We believe long-duration storage is a critical part of the solution and that it must be safe, sustainable, and affordable at scale.

Ore Energy’s mission is clear: to store renewable energy anywhere, for as long as needed, using materials that are available to everyone. By combining deep electrochemistry expertise with practical engineering, we are turning one of Earth’s most abundant resources into a cornerstone of the clean energy transition.
