Every debit order. Every collection. Every mandate confirmation. Our Payments Transact team runs the infrastructure behind Debi Check, authenticated collections and bulk payment systems, the plumbing that keeps money moving for millions of people, every day.

Right now, we're rebuilding it. If you're 1+ years into your back-end engineering career and ready to work on systems that matter, this is the role.

What you'll be part of

Our Payments division sits at the heart of how money moves, for individuals and for the corporate partners who rely on our infrastructure every day. The team supports systems that process billions of rands in transactions and we're consolidating legacy microservices into a cleaner, more scalable architecture. This is real, hands-on engineering not a holding pattern.

What you'll do

• Build and optimise back-end components that power our payments and collections functionality
• Write clean, reusable code, APIs and libraries
• Implement and optimise database models and queries
• Write automated tests and contribute to CI/CD pipelines
• Practice secure coding as part of everyday development
• Troubleshoot and debug issues across our payment’s environments
• React to monitoring and alerting events and support standby rotations
• Help with capacity planning and load testing
• Maintain and improve existing solutions as we migrate to a newer architecture

What you'll bring

• 1+ years of back-end development experience
• Practical experience in Java
• Genuine curiosity about how systems behave under load: you care about metrics and performance, not just output
• A habit of asking questions and a real drive to keep learning
• Comfort working in a team mid-transition things are moving and you'll move with them

(Our existing estate includes .NET experience there is relevant, but we want engineers who are genuinely ready to grow into Java and .NET)
