Job Description

As a Software Engineer, you will contribute to GE Vernova Grid Software's mission of enabling a more sustainable and reliable energy future by developing and enhancing software solutions that support critical power system operations worldwide. This role combines software engineering fundamentals with power systems knowledge, requiring hands-on experience in developing and maintaining enterprise applications using technologies such as C++ and Java, while gaining exposure to modern full-stack and cloud-based architectures. You will collaborate with senior engineers, architects, product managers, and domain experts to translate utility and grid operation requirements into high-quality software solutions. The ideal candidate will possess strong programming and analytical skills, a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures, and a passion for delivering reliable, scalable, and maintainable software. This role provides an opportunity to work on innovative Grid Software products that help transform the future of energy.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software components and applications for Grid Software and power system solutions.
  • Develop features using C++, Java, and modern software development technologies while adhering to engineering best practices.
  • Participate in code refactoring and modernization initiatives to improve maintainability, performance, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and domain experts to understand requirements and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Translate power systems and utility business requirements into efficient and reliable software implementations.
  • Develop and implement algorithms, data structures, and analytical functions within product modules.
  • Contribute to software design, code reviews, unit testing, and debugging activities.
  • Apply Agile development practices, CI/CD, automated testing, security, and quality standards throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot application performance, defects, and production issues.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver software features on time and with high quality.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong programming skills in C++ and/or Java with a solid foundation in software engineering principles.
  • Experience working with enterprise software products and complex codebases.
  • Understanding of software refactoring, code quality improvement, and maintainable design practices.
  • Familiarity with modern full-stack technologies, REST APIs, databases, and web application development.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
  • Knowledge of Linux and Windows development environments.
  • Understanding of power systems, energy management, grid applications, or utility operations is highly desirable.
  • Ability to learn and apply domain knowledge to develop effective software solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
  • 2-5 years of experience in software development or software product engineering.
  • Hands-on experience developing software using C++, Java, or similar object-oriented programming languages
  • Experience working through the full software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, and support.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and source control tools.
  • Exposure to software modernization, code maintenance, and debugging activities.
  • Knowledge of databases, APIs, and distributed application development.
  • Understanding of cloud technologies, microservices, or modern web frameworks is a plus.
  • Exposure to power systems, utilities, industrial control systems, EMS, DMS, SCADA, or related domains is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, work independently, and contribute effectively within a collaborative engineering team.
