We are purpose driven and collaborative, which drives innovation and our ability to make a real impact. These listings are testament to every person who helps make REA a great place to work.

Where the team fits in

This role sits within Financial Services, in our Acquisition & Retention tribe. The squad enables shared core backend services, integrations and data capabilities that power Financial Services consumer experiences across realestate.com.au and mortgagechoice.com.au.

This squad is responsible not just for delivery, but also for standing up clear ownership, strong engineering practices, operational readiness and a sustainable team rhythm to support the shared services and foundations of the teams around it.

The squad partners closely with Product, Design, Architecture, Delivery and Risk & Compliance in a regulated, operationally mature environment where system health, custodianship, compliance and risk management are part of normal engineering work.

What the role is all about

As a Software Engineer, you will help build and operate the shared backend services and integrations that underpin Financial Services consumer experiences. We’re looking for someone who can contribute effectively in the current environment, while growing with the team as we improve platform ownership, service boundaries and engineering maturity over time.

  • Design, build and maintain high-quality backend services, APIs, integrations and shared data capabilities.
  • Contribute to technical delivery end to end, from discovery and solution design through build, release, monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Make pragmatic technical decisions across service, integration and data-flow concerns that balance customer value, maintainability, delivery pace, compliance and risk.
  • Help establish strong engineering practices, healthy team ways of working and operational readiness in a new squad.
  • Partner closely with product, design, analytics and engineering peers to shape simple, scalable solutions, especially where multiple channels or teams depend on the same core services.
  • Contribute through code review, pairing, technical design, documentation and ownership of production outcomes, including incident response and follow-up improvements.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for an Engineer who is strong in fundamentals, useful quickly in today’s environment and excited to grow in a platform and integration-focused team.

You’ll likely bring many of the following:

  • Experience building and operating backend services, APIs, integrations or shared platform capabilities in a cross-functional product environment.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including solution design, code quality, debugging, refactoring and sound technical judgement.
  • Experience working in typed backend or service-oriented environments, with interest in GraphQL, REST APIs, asynchronous data flows or domain services.
  • Experience contributing to systems used by multiple products, channels or teams, especially where ownership, service boundaries and reliability matter.
  • Confidence working in existing production systems and improving them incrementally.
  • A strong quality mindset, including automated testing, CI/CD, safe deployment practices and maintainable, well-observed systems.
  • Practical experience improving production security, reliability, performance and observability, and confidence participating in operational support, incident response and follow-up remediation.
  • The ability to work effectively with product managers, designers, analysts, architects and other stakeholders in a regulated and operationally mature context.
  • A collaborative mindset, with a willingness to learn, share knowledge, raise questions early and help create clarity where ownership or patterns are still emerging.
