Job Description

Tesco Hungary Full-Time Working hours 40 Apply by 01-Jun-2028

About the role
Our platform is the primary traffic control layer for Tesco Technology, handling over 100 billion requests
per month at five nines uptime. It connects thousands of internal systems, secures external ingress, and
proxies Store-to-Cloud traffic from 50,000+ tills and devices across the UK, ROI, and Central Europe.
The platform is built on an Envoy control plane and a large distributed data plane, and is continuing to
evolve as new traffic patterns emerge across the organisation, including AI and agentic use cases.
You will lead the Budapest team responsible for building and running this platform in close partnership
with the London team. This is a hands-on engineering management role with a strong operational focus:
you will be accountable for reliability, incident response, observability, safe change, and continuous
improvement, alongside delivery and people leadership. We do not separate builders from operators, so
the role requires strong engineering judgement, comfort with production responsibility, and a clear
sense of ownership for platform outcomes end to end

What is in it for you
Tesco is a diverse and exciting employer, dedicated to being #aplacetogeton, providing career-defining opportunities to all of our colleagues. If you chose to join our business, we will provide you with:

  • Referral Bonus
  • Learning culture and excellent opportunities to develop your career within your chosen field or something altogether new
  • Varied and exciting projects to play a part in – there is always something new and exciting in the pipeline

If that sounds exciting, then we'd love to hear from you.

You will be responsible for
Lead and develop a team of engineers working on a mission critical traffic management platform,
creating clarity on priorities, raising the quality bar, and helping the team grow in technical depth and
operational maturity.

Own delivery for the team, balancing reliability, platform evolution, and the practical needs of product
engineering teams using the platform.

Shape how the team designs, builds, and operates the platform, from architecture and delivery practices
through to observability, incident response, post-incident learning, and continuous improvement.
Set a high bar for engineering quality and operational discipline through clear technical direction,
thoughtful prioritisation, and strong execution.

Drive a culture of safe change, measurable reliability, and blameless incident management, ensuring
the team treats production as a core part of the engineering problem rather than a downstream concern.
Work closely with engineers and leaders across Budapest and London to align roadmap, execution, and
operating model around a shared platform direction.

Contribute to the longer term evolution of the platform as the scope broadens beyond traditional API
traffic management into newer communication patterns, including AI and agentic traffic.
Hire well, coach actively, and create an environment where strong engineers can take ownership, grow
quickly, and do the best work of their careers.

You will need
We are looking for an engineering manager who has led strong engineers in a platform, infrastructure,
or reliability-oriented environment and is comfortable operating close to technical detail.

You should bring sound judgement in distributed systems, production operations, and incident
leadership, with the ability to make sensible trade-offs under pressure.

Experience with traffic management, API gateways, service to service communication, or adjacent
distributed infrastructure is highly relevant, but we are not trying to reduce the role to a narrow checklist
of tools.

You should be credible with senior engineers, practical in how you drive delivery, and thoughtful in how
you build team culture and operating rhythm.

This role will suit someone who enjoys leading through ambiguity, improving systems through iteration,
and taking real responsibility for platform outcomes in production.
