Lead the technical vision and strategy for systems that process tens of millions of customer transactions weekly, shaping the checkout experience for shoppers across the globe. In this role, you'll guide a team of engineers in building scalable, low-latency distributed systems while driving innovation that removes friction from the purchase journey and strengthens Amazon's retail foundation.

Key job responsibilities
- Guide technical strategy and architecture decisions for distributed systems that serve tens of millions of transactions weekly, ensuring scalability, resilience, and low-latency performance
- Build and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of operational excellence, continuous improvement, and psychological safety where team members can contribute their best work
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including product, operations, and business teams to align on priorities, communicate technical trade-offs, and drive solutions that enhance the customer experience
- Own operational excellence and reliability, including on-call support, incident response, and the implementation of systems and processes that maintain service quality
- Drive innovation initiatives that simplify the checkout process, reduce operational costs, and remove barriers to purchase completion for customers

A day in the life
As a Software Development Manager, you'll spend your time balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical collaboration. You might begin your day reviewing system performance metrics and discussing architectural decisions with your team, then transition into cross-functional meetings with product, operations, and business stakeholders to align on priorities. You'll mentor engineers through complex technical challenges, conduct code reviews to maintain quality standards, and participate in on-call rotations to support our follow-the-sun operational model. Throughout the week, you'll work with teams across time zones to troubleshoot production issues, plan feature releases, and identify opportunities to simplify the checkout experience for customers. Your role includes fostering a culture where your team can innovate confidently while maintaining the reliability and performance that millions of shoppers depend on.

Basic Qualifications


- 7+ years of engineering experience
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
