The Smith+Nephew's Sports Medicine group is building a next-generation, cloud-based platform for computer-assisted surgical navigation. Join us to create innovative digital solutions that are redefining Sports Medicine.

We are seeking a Senior SDET / SDET 2 (Software Development Engineer in Test) to join our Software Test team. In this role, you will own functional and automated testing of a Kotlin-based Android tablet application with native C++ video and 3D rendering components. You’ll build reliable mobile UI automation (Espresso or similar), validate complex rendering workflows, and collaborate closely with Product Owners, Developers, and DevOps teams to embed quality into CI/CD pipelines. You will also play an active role in Agile transformation within a high-performing, global development team.

What will you be doing?

  • Design, develop, and execute automated tests for Kotlin-based software at unit, integration, and system levels.Lead and coordinate internal and external test teams to ensure testing meets product requirements, quality standards, and delivery timelines.
  • Partner with Product Owners to build, refine, and manage Agile backlogs with a strong focus on software testability.
  • Collaborate with System Test Engineering to secure required test resources, including equipment, lab space, and personnel.
  • Integrate automated test-suites into CI-CD pipelines to enable continuous regression testing.
  • Test Android tablet applications featuring rich user interfaces, complex workflows, and real-time visual rendering.
  • Perform functional testing across user workflows, UI interactions, state transitions, and error or recovery scenarios.
  • Support debugging and root-cause analysis at both functional and code levels in collaboration with development teams.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive test strategies, plans, and detailed test cases aligned with product requirements.
  • Drive timely resolution of test issues by coordinating corrective actions across Engineering, Quality, Clinical, Marketing, and Regulatory teams.
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability across requirements, test cases, executions, and results to support audits and regulatory submissions.
  • Champion a quality-first culture and promote best practices across the software development lifecycle.
  • Execute design control activities to ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, and other applicable medical device software standards.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field. Equivalent hands-on experience in Android application testing and automation will be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Experience (Must have)
  • Should have a minimum of 5 years to max 8+ years of relevant experience in Android testing and automation.
  • Strong hands-on experience with mobile automation frameworks such as Espresso or equivalent tools.
  • Pract ical experience working with Kotlin and/or Java, including understanding application architecture, writing test utilities and helpers, and debugging issues.
  • Solid understanding of MVVM, MVP, or Clean Architecture patterns.
  • Experience testing video rendering, graphics, or 3D visualization on Android tablet applications.
  • Proven ability to maintain, enhance, and scale mobile test automation frameworks
  • Awareness of mobile performance considerations such as frame drops, latency, and rendering performance.

  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Should have a passion for learning emerging technologies and applying innovation to improve test effectiveness and quality.
  • This role is ideal for professionals who:
  • Are Android-focused SDETs or Test Engineers with an automation-first mindset.
  • Have experience testing complex, feature-rich tablet or mobile applications, beyond basic CRUD use cases.
  • Are comfortable working close to the code and collaborating daily with software developers.
  • Have hands-on exposure to Kotlin-based Android applications.
  • Have experience in regulated, safety-critical, or high-reliability domains (medical, automotive, industrial), which is a strong advantage but not mandatory.
