Job Description

Do you want to solve real customer problems through innovative technology? At Amazon, we hire the best minds in technology to innovate and build on behalf of our customers. Our Software Development Engineers (SDEs) use modern technology to solve complex problems while seeing their work's impact first-hand.

As an SDE-I, you'll own the entire lifecycle of your code — from design through deployment and ongoing operations. You will design and build scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems using cloud-native architectures and microservices. You'll work in an agile environment practising CI/CD principles, participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and take part in on-call operational responsibilities.

Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot (or equivalent frameworks) in a large distributed computing environment hosted on AWS

- Write clean, maintainable, production-quality code with comprehensive unit and integration test coverage

- Build and operate resilient distributed systems that are fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable, and cost-effective

- Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decision-making with cross-disciplinary teams

- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment workflows

- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues; participate in on-call rotations to ensure 24/7 system availability

- Leverage and contribute to the development of GenAI and AI-powered tools to enhance development productivity

- Collaborate effectively with international, multilingual teams across multiple time zones

Basic Qualifications

- Education: Currently enrolled in or completed a Bachelor's or Graduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related STEM field (minimum 60 ECTS in programming, algorithms, and systems).

- Expected graduation between October 2025 – September 2026, or graduated within the last 24 months.

Technical Requirements:
- Java: 1+ year hands-on experience developing applications, including object-oriented design patterns and the Java Collections Framework
- Spring Framework: Experience with Spring Boot or Spring MVC, including dependency injection and RESTful API development

- Data Structures & Algorithms: Practical implementation of core structures (arrays, linked lists, hash maps, trees, graphs) and algorithms (sorting, searching, recursion, dynamic programming) — evidenced through coursework, competitive programming, or projects

- SQL: Experience writing queries (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, subqueries) with at least one RDBMS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle), including basic schema design

- Git: Collaborative experience including branching, merging, pull requests, and conflict resolution

- Cloud Computing: Basic experience with AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP, including deploying applications

- Testing: Unit and integration testing experience (JUnit, Mockito, or equivalent) with TDD principles

- SDLC: Full development cycle exposure via internship (3+ months) or capstone project

- CI/CD: Experience with at least one tool (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent)

- Communication: Professional English proficiency (B2+ CEFR)

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous technical internship(s) of 6+ months in a software engineering role

- Experience with microservices architecture and distributed systems design patterns

- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS)

- Experience with NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB, Redis)

- Exposure to AI/ML concepts, GenAI tools, or machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)

- Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Grafana, Datadog)

- Knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals (OWASP Top 10, secure coding practices, identity management)

- Additional language proficiency (German, Luxembourgish) is an advantage

- Contributions to open-source projects or published technical work

- Experience with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and tools (Jira, Confluence)

About Amazon

Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking. We are driven by the excitement of building technologies, inventing products, and providing services that change lives. We embrace new ways of doing things, make decisions quickly, and are not afraid to fail. We have the scope and capabilities of a large company, and the spirit and heart of a small one.

Together, Amazonians research and develop new technologies from Amazon Web Services to Alexa on behalf of our customers: shoppers, sellers, content creators, and developers around the world.

Our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company. Our actions, goals, projects, programs, and inventions begin and end with the customer top of mind.

You'll also hear us say that at Amazon, it's always "Day 1." What do we mean? That our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon's very first day - to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and focus on delighting our customers.
