Job Description

Software Architect, Enterprise Apps & Mobile

Department: Information Technology

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: US (Remote)

Reporting To: Senior Director Software Engineering

The Software Architect, Enterprise Applications & Mobile provides technical leadership for the company’s enterprise commercial platform, the system of record for company-wide order flow and a daily operating tool for more than 400 users across sales, operations, and warehouse teams. This role advances the platform from an ordering application into an end-to-end solution supporting the surgical case lifecycle, including case scheduling, surgical planning integration, inventory visibility, warehouse fulfillment, and billing.

This role leads the architecture and delivery of a mobile-first experience for field representatives and clinical staff working in hospitals, operating rooms, and warehouses, often in environments with constrained or intermittent connectivity. The Software Architect ensures the mobile application is fast, reliable, and offline-capable, with mobile performance serving as a core measure of platform success.

The Software Architect owns the technical direction and delivery discipline of the platform through hands-on architecture, code contribution and review, leadership of distributed engineering resources, and direct accountability for a production system that supports critical daily business operations. This position serves as a build-and-own technical leadership role rather than a governance-only architecture function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end architecture across web, mobile, services, and data — application structure, data model, integration patterns, security, and deployment topology on Azure.
  • Own application security across the platform: access control and least-privilege authorization, secure development lifecycle, secrets and key management, encryption of data in transit and at rest, dependency and vulnerability management, and audit logging across web, mobile, and integrations.
  • Lead the mobile strategy and delivery: cross-platform application architecture, offline-first data synchronization and conflict resolution, device and release management, and app distribution for a field workforce.
  • Lead delivery of the active roadmap, including field inventory tracking, loaner and consignment management, audit and inventory-control tooling, notifications, and scheduling.
  • Design and own integrations with enterprise systems (ERP, PLM, identity, reporting/BI) and with surgical planning and navigation platforms.
  • Extend inventory visibility below the distributor/agency level so assets can be located, audited, and repositioned — directly reducing carrying cost and write-off exposure.
  • Provide technical leadership to offshore engineering and contract resources: set standards, run design and code reviews, own the definition of done.
  • Establish and enforce engineering discipline — branching strategy, CI/CD, automated testing, environment management, release process, and technical documentation.
  • Retain and codify institutional knowledge in-house through architecture decision records, runbooks, and onboarding material, eliminating single-point-of-failure dependency on individual contributors.
  • Partner directly with commercial, operations, quality, and executive stakeholders to translate business problems into a sequenced technical roadmap.
  • Contribute to build-vs-buy evaluations with clear architectural and total-cost rationale.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field required.
  • 10+ years building and shipping production software; 3+ years in an architect or technical lead capacity.
  • Demonstrated ownership of production mobile applications on iOS and Android — React Native or comparable cross-platform framework — through design, release, and post-launch operation.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a business-critical enterprise application at meaningful scale, including hundreds of users and transactional workloads.
  • Proven experience integrating with ERP and enterprise systems of record.
  • Track record leading distributed and/or contract engineering teams to delivery commitments.
  • Medical device, life sciences, or other regulated-industry software experience, including 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, or IEC 62304 preferred.
  • Domain exposure to orthopedics, surgical workflow, field inventory, consignment, or medical device distribution preferred.
  • Prior experience stabilizing and scaling a platform inherited from contractors or a departed team preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of offline-first mobile architecture, including local persistence, background sync, conflict resolution, and graceful degradation on poor connectivity.
  • Knowledge of mobile device management, enterprise app distribution, and app store release processes. Preferred.
