About the opportunity
The Metabolic Cybernetics Lab is a world-class metabolism research group based at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. Our work combines genetics, physiology, and large-scale molecular data to uncover the causal mechanisms regulating metabolic health. To better store and analyse multi-omics data generated by the lab and collaborators worldwide, we are developing an integrated research data platform that streamlines the integration and analysis of complex biological datasets in just a few clicks.
We are hiring an experienced Software Architect to help us build the next generation of this platform. You will work across the full stack, contributing to database architecture/data pipeline, backend and frontend development, APIs, and infrastructure, and partner directly with researchers to turn scientific requirements into a real-world product that meets their needs. This is a role with genuine technical breadth. You will help shape system architecture, write clean and efficient code, and ensure the platform is scalable, performant, and reliable as it grows.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
Developing and maintaining the multi-omics platform across backend, frontend, and API layers.
Contributing to database schema design, data modelling, and the integration of complex experimental datasets.
Supporting deployment infrastructure, containerisation, and data management systems.
Building internal tools and automated workflows that improve research productivity and reproducibility.
Working closely with researchers to translate scientific requirements into practical software and database solutions.
Maintaining documentation, testing practices, version control, and coding standards.
Supporting data integrity, governance, and the secure handling of research data.
Participating in technical discussions, troubleshooting, and continuous platform improvement.
Exploring how AI tools can be applied to accelerate development and improve the platform.
About you
Essential
Solid experience in full-stack software engineering.
Experience with relational databases, schema design, and data modelling.
Comfort working with structured, complex datasets.
Familiarity with backend systems, REST or GraphQL APIs, and modern development workflows.
Experience with containerisation and deployment (Docker, cloud, or HPC environments).
Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication, including with non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
Desirable
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, Django, GraphQL, or Next.js.
Experience working with biological, proteomics, or multi-omics datasets.
Background contributing to research software or scientific data platforms.
Interest in computational biology, bioinformatics, or research data infrastructure.
Experience applying AI tools to improve developer productivity or accelerate delivery.
