Job Description

You will join a tight-knit team that manages CERN's Electronics, Mechanical and Mathematics Software Services, providing more than 50 engineering, mathematics and multiphysics applications used by thousands of engineers for the design and maintenance of accelerators, detectors and infrastructure!

Working closely with experienced colleagues, you will contribute to the operation and evolution of these services through automation, internal web development and user support. The role offers exposure to software provisioning, licence usage analysis, container-based workflows for FPGA development, and service support in an international organisation environment. You will also contribute to shared section activities, including providing support for the e-mail service.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to improving service processes, including the migration of licence management workflows to the CERN resources portal.
  • Develop Python-based tools, reports and dashboards to analyse licence usage and support contract renewal discussions.
  • Contribute to the generation and maintenance of EDA tool containers for CERN's CI infrastructure for FPGA development.
  • Help maintain and evolve in-house web tools used to manage software access requests, approvals and provisioning.
  • Provide user-oriented support for software installation, access and service requests through the ServiceNow platform.
  • Share first-line support activities across section services, including limited involvement in the e-mail service.
  • Contribute to the day-to-day operation of the service in collaboration with more experienced team members.

Your profile

  • Initial experience in the installation, configuration, operation or maintenance of computing systems or technical software services.
  • Experience developing with Python.
  • Experience with Git-based collaborative workflows.
  • Experience with Docker containers, or willingness to acquire it.
  • Willingness to learn and work across different technical areas.
  • Experience with Linux environments would be a plus.
  • Familiarity with CI and DevOps practices would be a plus.
  • Experience with web development using Python frameworks such as Flask, would be a plus.
  • Experience interfacing with REST APIs would be a plus.
  • Experience with Kibana, Fluent Bit or similar logging/visualisation tools would be a plus.
  • Experience with OpenShift would be a plus.

Skills

  • Python scripting and automation.
  • Web application development for internal tools.
  • Linux environment exposure.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to work effectively within a team and with other technical groups.
  • Basic French language skills would be an advantage.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 28.05.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Hybrid

Target start date: 01-July-2026
