JOB OVERVIEW:
The Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in history, civics, geography, economics, and related social science disciplines, fostering a positive and engaging learning environment, and contributing to the overall academic and moral development of students. The Social Studies Teacher will inspire intellectual curiosity about human societies, cultures, governments, and historical events while developing students’ critical thinking, analytical, research, and communication skills. The teacher should embody the values and principles of Jesuit education, emphasizing the Ignatian philosophy of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and the Jesuit commitment to academic excellence, service, and justice.
CORE FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Curriculum Development:
- - Design and implement a rigorous and engaging Social Studies curriculum that aligns with national and state standards and reflects the school's mission.
- - Integrate Jesuit values and ethical considerations into the study of history, government, economics, geography, and current events.
- Instruction and Classroom Management:
- - Conduct dynamic and interactive Social Studies classes covering historical periods, world cultures, civic engagement, economics, geography, and contemporary issues.
- - Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages inquiry, discussion, and respectful dialogue.
- - Inspire a passion for understanding historical events, cultural perspectives, and societal systems.
- - Encourage students to analyze primary and secondary sources, evaluate evidence, and develop informed conclusions.
- - Promote civic responsibility and engagement through the study of democratic principles, public policy, and social justice issues.
- - Help students understand diverse perspectives and appreciate the complexity of historical and contemporary global issues.
- - Integrate ethical discussions into coursework, encouraging students to reflect on moral, societal, and historical implications.
- - Engage students in conversations that promote critical thinking, empathy, and informed citizenship.
- Assessment and Feedback:
- - Evaluate student performance through assessments, projects, presentations, research assignments, and examinations.
- - Provide timely and constructive feedback to help students understand their strengths and areas for growth.
- Student Support:
- - Provide additional support and guidance to students who may need assistance Provide additional support and guidance to students who may need assistance with Social Studies coursework.
- - Mentor and advise students interested in pursuing further studies or careers in history, political science, law, international relations, economics, education, or related fields.

Qualifications
COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to teach various Social Studies courses and age levels.
- Understanding of educational theory and practice.
- Ability to teach a range of courses offered by the department, including history, government, economics, geography, and related disciplines.
- Ability to use current learning management technology.
- Commitment to working with a diverse student body.
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment to collaboration.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in History, Social Studies Education, Political Science, Geography, Economics, or a related field.
- Advanced Placement (AP) experience preferred.
- Teaching certification or relevant educational credentials.
- Familiarity with Jesuit educational principles and a commitment to the school's mission.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of historical, political, economic, and social systems.
- Previous teaching experience, preferably at the high school level.
