GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Social Work Supervisors provide direct supervision to social workers as they support families in taking greater responsibility for raising their children and assist communities in supporting those families. Additionally, Social Work Supervisors oversee social workers in their efforts to ensure the safety, well-being, and permanency of children and vulnerable adults.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Responsible for all aspects of case management.
  • Develops and interprets unit policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Reviews and revises operational standards for the social services work unit to coincide with best practices, State and Federal requirements, and DFS policy.
  • Assures investigations, case management, and public service duties within DFS rules and regulations and State and Federal mandates.
  • Provides community education regarding child abuse and neglect, adult protection, DFS procedures, child welfare practice, and other related topics.
  • Enhances Department and community relationships by outreach and collaboration with community partners.
  • Networks with community partners to identify gaps and develop needed services.
  • Assesses training needs and develops and provides training to staff and families.
  • Assures social services workers use best practices and are current on changes to laws, rules, policies, and trends.
  • Interviews and makes discipline, hire, and fire decisions.
  • Conducts performance appraisals.
  • Identifies and collects necessary evaluative data and statistical information to measure outcomes concerning the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and families.
  • Monitors and approves expenses to stay within assigned budgets.

Examples of duties

PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to applicants who have a Bachelor's Degree or higher in social work, counseling, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, or administration of justice, plus at least four (4) years of professional work experience in social work, juvenile probation, counseling and/or correctional rehabilitation.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of agency, department, and statewide rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and Wyoming Statutes.
  • Knowledge and skill in management and supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of needs assessment.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services.
  • Skills in interviewing, facilitation, mediation, and de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of child development as well as separation, attachment, and bonding of children and families.
  • Knowledge of the legal system.
  • Knowledge of Department of Family Services institutions and field services operations, including understanding program goals and objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Social Work)

Experience:

1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Social Services Programs) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Social Services Program Analyst

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Social Services Programs) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Social Services Program Analyst

  • All positions within the Department of Family Services will require a background information check, including the taking of fingerprints, which will be completed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation, the Department of Family Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for every successful applicant.
