Job Description
National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to offer an exempt, full-time position who will be responsible for managing NFF's social media presence including strategy, content, community, and results. The Social Media Manager is a chance for a curious, culture-obsessed storyteller and strategist who sees endless possibility to grow NFF's social presence into the online place people visit to fall in love with forests, deepening this appreciation for themselves and, ultimately, supporting the NFF so we can preserve these landscapes for future generations.
About the NFF: The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress in 1990, is the official national partner to the US Forest Service (USFS). In recent years, the Foundation has grown significantly in organizational capacity, revenue, and programmatic impact. Today, the NFF works with people, partners and communities across the country to restore forests and watersheds; make forests more resilient to wildfire; and ensure accessible and sustainable opportunities for recreation in our National Forests. NFF leads with impact, deploying roughly 90% of its expenses towards projects and programs across the country's 193-million-acre National Forest System. NFF is forward-thinking and innovative, with ambitious strategies and goals building toward a bold future: a world where caring for our forests is second nature.
Position Function: The Social Media Manager reports to the Marketing Director and is a growth-oriented position for someone who finds a way to turn NFF's mission and on-the-ground impact into scroll-stopping, share-worthy stories, with a particular emphasis on video. Working closely with the Director of Marketing, the Content & Creative team, and teams across the organization, this role considers the “we over me” approach to collaboration and translates local conservation projects into stories that resonate locally and nationally. Success will be measured by growth in reach, engagement, and community.
Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Social Media Manager will:
Social Media Strategy & Growth
- Develop and own an audience-centered organic social media strategy aligned with NFF's brand, marketing and advancement priorities and organizational goals
- Assess target audience, distinct platform fit, and strategic priorities to decide where NFF should invest, which channels get full strategic and day-to-day ownership, and which get a lighter footprint, and evolve that approach over time as audiences and platforms shift
- Establish channel-specific objectives, key performance indicators and growth targets, and demonstrate measurable growth in reach, engagement, followers, and other measurable audience actions
- Monitor platform changes, audience behavior, cultural conversations and emerging trends to keep NFF's presence current, relevant and a step ahead
- Develop and maintain an integrated social media content calendar aligned with high-level marketing strategy, organizational strategy, conservation priorities, seasonal moments and audience interests
- Partner with NFF's growth marketing agency, sharing data, learning outcomes and insight that fuels larger acquisition and fundraising campaigns
Analytics, Testing & Optimization
- Monitor and analyze channel, content, audience and campaign performance, and translate data into clear, actionable recommendations
- Design and run structured tests across formats, creative approaches, messages and calls to action; document findings and apply learning going forward
- Identify the organic content that resonates most, and use a designated amplification budget to extend its reach to new and existing audiences
- Build and maintain social media dashboards and reports that communicate results, lessons learned and opportunities to drive goals; recommend key performance indicators that support marketing and organization-wide strategy
Community, Creator & Influencer Engagement
- Manage NFF's social communities daily, responding to comments and messages, encouraging conversation, and cultivating relationships with followers, fans and supporters
- Use social listening to understand audience interests, monitor sentiment, and uncover emerging engagement opportunities as well as potential risks to reputation
- Own direct relationship management with a select set of creators and community voices, while partnering with NFF's influencer agency of record, which leads vetting, contracting and logistics for broader creator and influencer campaigns
- Apply sound judgment when responding to marketplace influences, misinformation or sensitive issues, and follow escalation and response protocols for emerging or rapidly developing situations
Content Creation
- Translate complex conservation projects and technical subject matter into clear, actionable creative briefs to inspire engaging and share-worthy content development
- Oversee and guide social content development, inspiring content creators to consider scroll-stopping hooks, pacing, narrative structure and calls to action aligned with each platform
- Create compelling, platform-native content including copy, graphics, photography and, especially, short-form video, adapting stories and assets to the audience, format and best practices of each platform
- Build strong relationships across NFF to maintain a steady pipeline of timely, representative and geographically diverse stories to fuel storytelling across social platforms
- Build familiarity with wide-ranging creative assets and identify opportunities to repurpose video, photography or copy into multiple platform-specific formats
- Serve as a brand steward, ensuring social content is consistent with NFF's voice, look and feel; maintain accuracy, accessibility and editorial standards across all social content
Collaboration
- Collaborate with email, web, fundraising, communications, partnerships and field teams to build coordinated, cross-channel campaigns
- Ensure social media supports email acquisition, donor engagement, fundraising and program participation without directly owning those functions
- Share social media guidance, content co-creation ideas and performance insights with colleagues, partners and key stakeholders

- Strong hands-on video production and editing skills, including short-form content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Facebook

- Collaborative partner who values diverse input and works comfortably with agencies, creators and teams across the organization
- Owns and advocates for audience-first perspective; listens to community feedback and adjusts tone and approach; warm, welcoming and inclusive communicator
- Self-starter comfortable with ambiguity and energized by change; treats every test, win or miss as a chance to learn and grow
