Job Description
The Social Media Manager works closely with the Director, Content to tell the CalArts story—of alums, faculty, staff, and students. The Social Media Manager is responsible for: the operational planning, establishment, execution, and evaluation of ongoing and sustainable social media communications; producing relevant content for various social media sites for targeted audiences; collaborating with staff contributing to content production; ensuring all online venues are updated and maintained consistently to maintain positive online presence; educating and training the CalArts community on proper use of social media and online communications. The Social Media Manager also serves as the subject matter expert on social media and online content management.
Essential Job Functions
- Launches and manages social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, and other relevant social networking sites.
- Writes, edits, and manages all social media related content.
- Provides live coverage for key Institute events.
- Provides education and direction to schools/departments, faculty, staff, and students in developing strategic social media plans; works closely with those collaborators to ensure proper content and messaging executed online is relevant to CalArts’ goals.
- Monitors any and all mention of CalArts found online; tracks alerts and monitors social media sites around the clock via mobile devices.
- Manages online discussions in a timely manner and crafts responses to social media posts and online news outlets.
- Trains and advises on running effective social media campaigns for schools and offices to establish consistency of communications across multiple networks.
- Assists in building relationships with members of the media by providing constant, relevant, and newsworthy information on the social media sites.
- Conducts weekly editorial meetings to collect ideas from team members and creates and oversee editorial calendar of upcoming stories.
- Oversees and/or coordinates the collection, compilation, and analysis of online activity data and analytics; develops, writes, and presents comprehensive statistical and narrative reports.
- Creates content (text, video, photos, GIFs) specific for social media that can that help tell “the CalArts story” and be shared on the CalArts’ school websites and vice versa;
- Produces videos and audio snippets for 24700 that can be repurposed on social media as well as other websites.
- Establishes (when needed) and then (co)manages and monitors social media accounts for schools and departments, including Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
- Works with other schools/departments to coordinate social messaging;
- Develops social media plans, including paid advertising, and campaigns around events and initiatives;
- Cultivates “relationships” through social media channels, through conversations and following key people.
- Writes and updates content for CalArts internal and external websites, including the 24700 and The HUB as needed;
- Seeks out, proposes, and writes stories.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or similar, preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered.
Experience
- 1-2 years of experience working in progressively responsible communications and social media positions with relevant knowledge related to managing and producing social media content and operations.
Skills/Abilities
- Strong creativity and critical thinking skills required.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills (AP Style and Chicago Manual of Style) a plus.
- Experience in contributing to and managing social media.
- Strong interviewing skills and the ability to create timely and newsworthy stories.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse university and health care community.
- Ability to gather analytical data, compile information, and prepare reports for presentation.
- Ability to provide technical coordination and management of development and/or implementation projects in area of expertise.
- Social media program planning and implementation skills.
- Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
- Ability to collaborate with employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Experience with photo, video, and editing programs (Photoshop, iMovie, FinalCut, etc.).
