Division/Program Summary:
The Office of External Affairs manages many of the agency’s most critical interactions with the public, from raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors to advancing policies and responding to health emergencies.

The Bureau of Communications, housed within the Office of External Affairs, develops culturally responsive public health marketing campaigns; generates and crafts materials to inform New Yorkers of health information and program services, ensuring accessibility for all; provides access to translation services for collateral materials and clinics; maintains the agency’s website; and publishes content on the agency’s social media platforms.

Within Creative Communications, the Design group oversees the artwork, design, layout, and creation of print and digital media to inform New Yorkers of key health topics and emergency situations.

Reporting to the Director of Design, the Social Media Graphic Designer is responsible for the look, feel, creation, and development of the Health Department social media images design, in collaboration with the Digital Communications and Design teams. The Social Media Graphic Designer handles proactive design for planned social campaigns as well as rapid response design for emergency and urgent situations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist Design Director in overseeing the look and feel of social media design projects. Work closely with the Digital Communications Social Media team in the execution of messaging and campaigns.
- Design social media content with firm attention to typography, composition, and message hierarchy. Assist in design for print, web, and video as needed.
- Analyze and transform health data into easy-to-understand and compelling content with illustrations, infographics, charts, and graphs.
- Ensure all social media graphics meet standards of design excellence and adhere to agency brand guidelines.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Communications team, including Creative Communications (Marketing, Digital Communications, Language Services, and Content and Copy), Press Office, and Executive Communications, as projects call for interaction and support.
- Work in a 24/7 fast-paced media environment with short turnaround of projects after hours and on weekends as necessary.

GRAPHIC ARTIST - 91415

Qualifications

(1) A baccalaureate degree, with a major in fine or graphic arts, from an accredited college and one year of full-time paid experience as a commercial or graphic artist; or
(2) A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus two years of training in a technical school approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable governmental agency, in oils, water colors, painting, design, black and white, layout, computer graphics, and other art media, and three years of acceptable full-time paid experience as a commercial or graphic artist.
To be qualified for assignment to Assignment Level II, individuals must have:
(a) at least one year of experience as a Graphic Artist, Assignment Level I; or
(b) the Qualification Requirements described in "1" or "2" above, plus two additional years of acceptable specialized paid experience conceptualizing and initiating graphic art projects.
