The Social Emotional Wellness Specialist (SEWS) works with students who need support with social emotional, behavioral, and other health needs under the direction and guidance of special education teachers and in collaboration with school social workers and school nurses. The Social Emotional Wellness Specialist incorporates intervention strategies that teach students more appropriate ways to deal with their behaviors and decision-making processes while supporting the implementation of behavior intervention plans through safety monitoring. These strategies include increased self-control, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), restorative practices, problem-solving skills and replacement behavior supports. The SEWS helps students, their families and the educational system overcome health problems that impede learning. They assist in the provision of services for special education students through direct service to support behavior, monitoring for safety, consultation and liaison with school, home, and community. They help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered them.
