This rewarding position works directly with the local Aboriginal community, providing a welcoming, culturally safe first point of contact for individuals and families seeking Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) support. As a SEWB Intake Worker, you will build trusting relationships, coordinate referrals, and connect people with the services they need.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Intake Worker is responsible for providing a welcoming,

culturally safe and trauma-informed entry point to GEGAC’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing services. The

role undertakes intake, triage, brief intervention, referral and emergency relief support.

The SEWB Intake worker will provide community and support services relevant information regarding internal

and external services available and develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. The position

works within an Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing framework, recognising the importance of

culture, family, community, Country and spirituality in supporting healing and recovery.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience undertaking intake, assessment, triage and care coordination.
  • Experience working with people experiencing complex social, emotional, mental health and/or AOD concerns
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice.
  • Strong communication, assessment and documentation skills.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing principles and culturally safe practice.
  • Demonstrated skills in communicating, engaging and build rapport with Aboriginal individuals, families and
  • community.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and respond to high-risk situations.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

  • Relevant qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Community Services, Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs or a related field ESSENTIAL
  • Current professional membership of AHPRA, AASW, ACA/PACFA or equivalent DESIRABLE
  • Valid Victorian driver’s licence ESSENTIAL
  • A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
