Snack Bar Supervisor

Prepares and serves food and beverages in accordance with brand standards while performing other miscellaneous duties in a food service operation. Provides courteous service to customers and promotes good customer relations. Assists in leading a team of student baristas at one or more high volume Starbucks, or other retail outlet on campus.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cooks and prepares and packages food and convenience food items for sale such as sandwiches, breakfast items, pastries, parfaits, and various ready to eat foods to be sold.
  • Prepares and serves hot and iced beverages according to brand standard recipes that require simple preparation methods including; coffees, teas, espresso based beverages, refreshers, frappes, and milk and non-dairy based beverages.
  • Oversees and performs the preparation, portioning, and distribution of items/ingredients for beverages, sandwiches, baked goods in accordance with recipes and brand standards.
  • Oversees and trains student baristas and shift supervisor personnel as required.
  • Training student baristas through on-boarding, and maintaining training documents for seasonal and ongoing brand updates.
  • Compiles and maintains records of food use, prepares simple reports, and plans the disposal and utilization of left-over food, following procedures and brand standards.
  • Maintains sanitation records in keeping with state, local, and brand standards.
  • Maintains adequate records for tracking equipment cleaning, preventative maintenance, and requests for work orders.
  • Assesses, evaluates, and makes changes to daily shift schedules based on staffing, level of business, and special events on campus.
  • Attends serving line station and beverage stations by maintaining appearance, quality, cleanliness, sanitation, and product levels.
  • Assists in staff management through coaching, training, maintaining documentation, and communicating to store management.
  • Performs cleaning/sanitizing activities that may include, sweeping/mopping floors, bus tables to include cleaning/sanitizing table tops and chairs, assist dish/pot room staff, removal of garbage/trash from unit to approved disposal containers.
  • Greets customers, assists customers, takes food and drink orders; may accept payment for items, uses Point of Sale equipment (cash register) as needed.
  • Responsible for filling out production worksheets to stock items, track food production, product utilization, shortages, including overproduction and/or spoilage/waste.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Position works in a kitchen area which is heated by ovens and stoves.
  • Position involves frequent bending, remaining in a stationary position and moving throughout the assigned work area.
  • The work is performed in an Industrial Kitchen where there may be some discomfort in low temperature areas (-10 degrees F) and/or high temperature areas (90 degrees F).
  • There may be risk involved when working with some machinery and on wet floors.

Work Schedule, Travel, or Other Job Expectations

  • The expected work schedule for this position is Thursday - Monday, 1pm to 9pm (Central Time).
  • The position is part of key support staff and flexibility of schedule will be required in instances such as covering for managers and in accordance with store hour changes during summer and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in fast-food procedures (such as gained as a Food Court/Snack Bar Attendant or closely related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of supervisory experience in food service, hospitality, or related industries

  • Knowledge of basic supervisory practices, including monitoring and assessing individual and team performance to ensure quality and identify areas for improvement.
  • Skill in coordinating work activities and adjusting actions in response to changing priorities and the needs of others.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information and ideas to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to fully understand instructions, follow up with appropriate questions, and respond effectively.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, including prioritizing tasks and overseeing the time and work of others.
  • Ability to recognize when issues or problems arise and identify situations that may require corrective action.
  • Ability to train and instruct others, including identifying learning needs and supporting skill development.
  • Skill in coaching and developing others to improve performance, knowledge, and job effectiveness.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and subordinates through various methods (in person, phone, and written communication).
  • Skill in organizing, planning, and prioritizing work to meet operational needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships, fostering teamwork, trust, and collaboration.
  • Ability to maintain simple account records and forms accurately.
  • Ability to perform simple calculations accurately and efficiently, particularly in handling transactions involving products and cash.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3506 - Snack Bar Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/3/2026.

  • Salary Information The budgeted salary for this position is $19/hour - $21/hour.
  • Fully Onsite Position This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
  • Work Schedule The expected work schedule for this position is Thursday - Monday, 1pm to 9pm (Central Time).
  • Sponsorship This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
