Job Description
Purpose of the role
The SMED Assistant is responsible for supporting and optimizing machine setup and changeover processes to significantly reduce downtime and improve production efficiency at MCC Label - Paarl. This role is pivotal in applying SMED principles to streamline changeovers, ensuring the highest standards of productivity and minimal disruption to production schedules.
The Role:
In this exciting role, you will:
Deliver daily SMED team objectives related to job preparation and press changeovers.
Assist with press changeovers to reduce downtime and improve overall equipment efficiency.
Ensure all jobs are SMED-ready and checked before moving to press.
Support the Production Systems Co-ordinator’s continuous improvement initiatives by reducing changeover times in a structured and agreed manner.
Assist with remounting plates to ensure smooth changeovers, especially for multi-item jobs.
Monitor presses during lunch breaks to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour operation.
Complete roll changes on Verbex and lamination units as required.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Work in accordance with site safety standards and contribute to achieving safety objectives.
Adhere to quality systems and participate in local risk assessments.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organised work environment at all times.
Support and respond to relevant KPIs as part of the SMED team.
Press & Technical Support
Clean presses during changeovers, with specific focus on gravure unit cleaning.
Ensure consistent supply of ink and solvents to the gravure unit.
Manually check gravure ink viscosity and calibrate the viscosity meter throughout the shift.
Assist with waste management, including removal and replacement of waste matrix bins.
Perform general housekeeping and cleaning duties around the press area.
To succeed in this role, you will require:
Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
Accuracy
Attention to detail
Team player with ability to work on own initiative
Ability to work under pressure, meeting multiple deadlines
Good communication skills
Quality focused and attention to detai
Experience in the printing industry will be advantageous.
