Job Description Summary:

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director (MD, DO, or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff.

Qualifications 4 year / Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences or related field of study (Preferred) Work Experience 1 - 2 years Direct patient care experience as it relates to polysomnography and/or respiratory therapy (Required) Licenses and Certifications Required Certifications/Licensures: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist; or Current Georgia Registered Respiratory Therapist License verified by the Georgia Composite State Board Essential Functions TESTING AND PREPARATION PROCEDURES - SLEEP TECH: Prepare the patient and calibrate equipment in accordance with established American Academy of Sleep medicine (AASM) guidelines. Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary. Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting. GATHER AND ANALYZE PATIENT INFORMATION: Gather and analyze patient information in accordance with the American Academy of Sleep medicine (AASM) guidelines. Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. Complete and verify documentation. Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient. POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES: Perform polysomnographic procedures in accordance with established American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines. Follow procedural protocols such as, Polysomnogram (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data. Follow lights out procedures to establish and document baseline values such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc. Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify and report signal abnormalities. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Assist with appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc. Follow lights on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.). Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. POLYSOMNOGRAPHIC RECORD SCORING: Stage and score patient records in accordance with established American Academy of Sleep medicine (AASM) guidelines. Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Score clinical events such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc., according to center specific protocols. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. SERVICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL ISSUES: Possess and/or demonstrate the following department requirements. Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues. Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance. Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory. Comply with the BRPT Standards of Conduct. Maintain current CPR or BCLS certification. Respond to study participant's procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information. Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy. ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS: Collects data in a systematic and ongoing process Issues are identified and diagnoses are developed based on assessment data. Prioritizes data collection based on the patient's condition and needs. Identifies expected outcomes and plan based on diagnoses or issues. DOCUMENTATION: Documents and submits required information and data in a timely fashion. Clearly and accurately documents designated processes, policies, products, service offerings, etc. Ensures that documentation is tailored to expected readers / users. Uses correct terminology. Conforms to required style and format. TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT USE: Demonstrates technical skill in using equipment appropriate for role. Understands equipment operation. Maintains equipment in working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems. Uses technology to increase productivity. Adapts to new technology Additional Duties Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines. Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization. Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs). Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time. Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs. For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age- specific customer service skills. Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
