The Site Foreman / Site Manager is responsible for the supervision, coordination, and execution of daily construction activities on site to ensure work is completed safely, on programme, within quality standards, and in accordance with company procedures and contractual requirements.
The role requires strong leadership, practical construction knowledge, planning capability, and the ability to manage labour, subcontractors, materials, plant, and work fronts effectively. The Site Foreman / Site Manager acts as the operational link between senior management and site labour and is responsible for maintaining productivity and discipline on site.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Site Supervisor & Coordination
- Supervise and coordinate all daily site activities.
- Manage labour teams and subcontractors on site.
- Allocate labour, tools, plant, and materials to work fronts.
- Ensure work is executed according to drawings and specifications.
- Monitor productivity and progress throughout the day.
- Ensure sufficient manpower and resources are available.
- Coordinate work between different trades and subcontractors.
- Ensure all work fronts remain operational and productive.
- Report delays, shortages, and site issues to senior management immediately.
Programme & Production Management
- Execute work in accordance with the approved construction programme.
- Plan daily and weekly activities with site management.
- Ensure targets and deadlines are achieved.
- Monitor progress against programme requirements.
- Identify risks to programme and implement corrective action where required.
- Assist with recovery plans and acceleration where necessary.
- Ensure materials and plant are available ahead of scheduled activities.
- Coordinate sequencing of works to avoid delays and rework.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations.
- Enforce company safety rules and site-specific safety requirements.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Ensure all personnel are inducted before entering site.
- Ensure PPE is worn correctly at all times.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards across all work areas.
- Identify unsafe conditions and stop unsafe work immediately.
- Report incidents, near misses, and hazards to management.
- Ensure barricading, signage, and access control are maintained.
Quality Control
- Ensure workmanship complies with approved drawings and specifications.
- Monitor construction quality continuously.
- Identify defects and arrange corrective action immediately.
- Ensure setting out and dimensional accuracy are maintained.
- Prevent unnecessary rework and material wastage.
- Coordinate inspections with consultants and quality personnel.
- Ensure proper curing, protection, and finishing of completed works.
- Monitor compliance with SANS standards and project specifications.
Labour & Subcontractor Management
- Supervise labour attendance and productivity.
- Manage subcontractor performance on site.
- Ensure labour discipline is maintained.
- Provide clear instructions to labour and subcontractors.
- Assist with resolving disputes and operational issues.
- Ensure subcontractors comply with safety, quality, and programme requirements. Monitor labour outputs against planned production targets.
Site Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily site diaries.
- Record labour attendance, plant usage, deliveries, delays, and incidents.
- Report material shortages and procurement requirements.
- Maintain photographic records where required.
- Assist with progress reporting.
- Ensure drawings on site are current and correctly issued.
- Record site instructions and variations communicated on site. Track plant and equipment utilization.
Material & Plant Management
- Monitor material usage and prevent wastage.
- Ensure correct storage and protection of materials.
- Coordinate deliveries and offloading.
- Ensure plant and equipment are used safely and efficiently.
- Report plant breakdowns and operational issues immediately.
- Monitor fuel, consumables, and tool control where applicable.
Client & Team Communication
- Maintain professional communication with consultants, clients, and subcontractors.
- Attend site meetings where required.
- Communicate operational constraints and site issues proactively.
- Ensure instructions from management and consultants are implemented correctly. Escalate technical or contractual concerns to senior management.
REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- Trade qualification or construction-related qualification advantageous.
- Construction management qualification advantageous. Valid safety training and appointments advantageous.
SKILLS:
- Strong understanding of construction methods and sequencing.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings.
- Knowledge of concrete works, masonry, finishes, steelwork, and general building practices.
- Understanding of site safety requirements.
- Basic progamme management understanding.
- Knowledge of plant and equipment usage.
- Ability to coordinate multiple subcontractors and work fronts.
