Job Description

Purpose of the Role

The Site Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, operation, and upkeep of all mechanical, electrical, and building services systems across Midsummer Place Shopping Centre.

Working as part of the on-site engineering team and reporting to the Site Manager, the Site Engineer will ensure that all planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, and compliance-related activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. The role is essential in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and operational environment for retailers, visitors, contractors, and colleagues.

The Site Engineer will contribute to the smooth operation of the centre by proactively identifying defects, resolving technical issues, supporting contractor activities, and ensuring all engineering works are carried out in accordance with statutory regulations and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Engineering

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks in accordance with the maintenance schedule.

  • Respond to reactive maintenance requests and breakdowns within agreed service levels.

  • Undertake fault finding and repairs on mechanical, electrical, and building services equipment.

  • Monitor the performance and condition of plant and equipment, reporting any defects or concerns to the Site Manager.

  • Ensure all engineering systems are operating safely and efficiently.

  • Assist in maintaining the operational integrity of HVAC, electrical, water, lighting, fire alarm, and other critical building systems.

  • Complete minor repairs and maintenance tasks across the shopping centre as required.

Compliance & Health & Safety

  • Carry out all work in accordance with current Health & Safety legislation, safe systems of work, and company procedures.

  • Comply with permit-to-work systems and associated site controls.

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are completed in line with statutory and compliance requirements.

  • Support site audits, inspections, and compliance checks.

  • Report hazards, near misses, accidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.

  • Maintain good housekeeping standards within plant rooms, workshops, and engineering areas.

Contractor Support & Management

  • Escort and supervise specialist contractors where required.

  • Verify contractor works are completed safely and to the required standard.

  • Ensure contractors comply with site rules and permit requirements.

  • Assist with planned shutdowns, project works, and contractor-led maintenance activities.

Customer & Stakeholder Service

  • Provide a professional and proactive engineering service to centre management, retailers, and stakeholders.

  • Respond positively to retailer and occupier requests within the scope of the role.

  • Minimise disruption to retailers and visitors during maintenance activities.

  • Maintain a positive and professional image of the business at all times.

Administration & CAFM Management

  • Accurately complete maintenance records and service reports.

  • Update work orders and job completion details within the CAFM system.

  • Record plant readings, inspections, and compliance checks as required.

  • Ensure all documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Assist in the preparation of maintenance reports and operational updates.

Emergency Response

  • Respond to emergency situations and engineering incidents as required.

  • Support business continuity and emergency response procedures.

  • Participate in site emergency drills and training exercises.

  • Assist in restoring services promptly following equipment failures or incidents.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience within a building services, facilities maintenance, or engineering environment.

  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical building systems.

  • Experience carrying out planned and reactive maintenance activities.

  • Ability to diagnose faults and resolve technical issues effectively.

  • Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements and safe working practices.

  • Good communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Competent in the use of maintenance management or CAFM systems.

Desirable

  • City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, or Building Services Engineering.

  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.

  • HVAC, Water Hygiene, or other building services-related qualifications.

  • Experience within a retail, shopping centre, or public-facing environment.

  • IPAF, PASMA, or other relevant industry certifications.

  • Undertake reasonable additional duties as required by the Site Manager.

Working Hours - Mon to Fri 0800 - 1700

Salary - £40,000 - £45,000
