This role is intended to provide dedicated implementation capacity for the first phase of a UHN Acute Resuscitation Simulation Program. The role should combine strong operational coordination with simulation interest or expertise, stakeholder engagement, and a data-informed quality improvement lens.

The Simulation Specialist will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and evaluating a new Acute Resuscitation Simulation Program across Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals. The successful candidate will lead operational rollout, coordinate simulation activities across multiple clinical programs and sites, build relationships with frontline teams, and support development of a sustainable enterprise-wide simulation strategy.

This role combines project leadership, clinical education, simulation coordination, stakeholder engagement, quality improvement, and operational problem-solving. The Simulation Specialist will work collaboratively with physician leaders, nursing leaders, educators, operational leaders, respiratory therapists, unit managers, and data specialists to support simulation-based education focused on acute patient deterioration, resuscitation, and code response.

Duties:

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Development and Implementation
  • Lead implementation of the Acute Resuscitation Simulation Program across TGH and TWH.
  • Translate approved program objectives into an actionable implementation and rollout plan.
  • Develop standard approaches for simulation delivery, documentation, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Identify and prioritize participating units and clinical areas for program deployment.
  • Support development of simulation scenarios aligned with organisational priorities and identified educational needs.
  • Establish processes, tools, and resources required for sustainable simulation operations.

Simulation Coordination and Delivery

  • Coordinate planning, scheduling, and execution of simulation activities across multiple sites and clinical areas.
  • Collaborate with educators, Advanced Practice Nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other subject matter experts in simulation design and delivery.
  • Support facilitation and debriefing activities, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Ensure appropriate equipment, space, and logistical supports are available for simulation activities.
  • Coordinate procurement, deployment, storage, maintenance, and operational use of simulation equipment as required.

Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Management

  • Develop strong partnerships with unit managers, educators, physician leaders, clinical teams, and operational stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison between participating units and program sponsors.
  • Engage clinical leaders to identify educational priorities and opportunities for simulation-based improvement.
  • Support establishment and ongoing coordination of a simulation advisory group and governance structure.

Quality Improvement, Evaluation, and Data

  • Work with Decision Support, Quality Improvement, and program stakeholders to establish a measurement framework.
  • Develop processes to collect and analyse program metrics, outcomes, participation data, and qualitative feedback.
  • Identify recurring knowledge gaps, system issues, and opportunities for improvement identified during simulation activities.
  • Produce reports, presentations, and updates for program leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Contribute to future proposals supporting long-term program sustainability.

Project and Administrative Management

  • Develop and maintain project plans, timelines, workplans, and status reports.
  • Coordinate meetings, action plans, communications, and deliverables associated with the program.
  • Track milestones and ensure implementation activities remain on schedule.
  • Support recruitment and onboarding of program participants and collaborators as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of clinical experience in an acute care environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects, quality improvement initiatives, or educational programs.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and virtual collaboration platforms.

Preferred

  • Experience in simulation-based education.
  • Experience facilitating clinical simulations and debriefings.
  • Certification or formal training in simulation education.
  • Experience in critical care, emergency medicine, resuscitation, or acute care environments.
  • Experience with data collection, quality improvement methodologies, and outcome evaluation.
  • Knowledge of hospital operations and change management principles.
