
The Simons Center for Computational Geophysical Flows, housed at the Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science, is a new research and training hub, pioneering next-generation computational methods to address a range of problems in ocean, atmosphere, and ice dynamics.
We are seeking full-time Postdoctoral Fellows who will conduct deep and impactful research and contribute to the creative growth of the center and the broader Earth and Planetary Sciences at NYU. Candidates are expected to drive cutting edge research in the following areas of interest: multiscale interactions, geophysical and boundary layer turbulence, coupled atmosphere-ocean-ice dynamics, physics of rare events and climate risks, such as extreme precipitation and flooding, marine heatwaves. Candidates are expected to make advances in both methods and applications to further our understanding of complex multiscale flows on Earth and other planets. The Postdoctoral Fellows will be mentored by one or more of the Center’s core faculty (Carlos Fernandez-Granda, Sara Shamekh, Jonathan Weare, Laure Zanna, Yi Zhang) and are expected to lead independent research.
These positions, available immediately, are full-time appointments, initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for two years, subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
These positions are also connected to NYU's expansion in Global Science and Tech, which includes the launch of the Earth Systems Institute.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the current annual base salary range for this position is $62,500–$125,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer quality, as well as market and organization considerations.
○ Expertise in computational science
○ Proficiency in Python
○ Experience with high-performance computing (HPC), with GPUs preferred
○ Ability to work at the interface of AI and physics-based science/engineering problems
○ Ability to lead, develop, and contribute to multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
○ Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team
○ Outstanding written and oral communication skills
○ Strong technical and scientific curiosity
○ A solid record of relevant publications and software development appropriate to the applicant’s career stage
