Job Description

Works under general supervision of the Zoning Enforcement Senior Inspector to make inspections to enforce and/or ensure conformance to Codes of Memphis and Shelby County Code Enforcement.

Inspects the exterior and interior of existing residential structures (single and multi-family) units, commercial properties, and residential properties operating in a business capacity for compliance with codes and computerized methods to responsible party including property owners, landlords or tenants.

Pay Grade: 46

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education

Minimum Qualifications

• Three (3) years of experience in the building construction industry, code inspection or related experience; AND
• High school diploma or possess a GED.
• PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  

Duries and Responsibilities

• Performs field inspections according to inspection procedures and codes.
• Investigates and answers complaints.
• Recommends corrective actions regarding Code violations.
• Documents inspections approval or denial utilizing assigned technical equipment.
• Uses assigned technical equipment to input and retrieve information.
• Issues violation orders/notices, using various computerized methods to responsible party including property owners, landlords or tenants.
• Prepares case records and materials for attorneys to use in court hearings.
• Testifies at hearings or in court on behalf of County.
• Interprets code requirements and recommends compliance procedures.
• Maintains inspection and various reports including photograph, notes of conversations, videos, correspondence, filed reviews, and other related information into a computerized system.
• Performs research to determine property ownership.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Thorough understanding and knowledge of applicable related codes and ordinances.
• Ability to make decisions and tactfully interact with general public.
• Ability to perform field inspections and investigations when required.
• General knowledge of computer usage and skills.
• Ability to operate basic office equipment such as copier, handheld devices, and smart phones.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.
• Knowledge of the general permit issuance structure.
  

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by date of employment.
• Must have access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance upon date of employment.
• Must be able to work various shifts including rotating weekends, on call weekends and or nights.
  

Physical Requirements

• Maybe be exposed to animals (dogs and cats), rodents, insects and deteriorating structures when conducting inspections.
• Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for an extended duration of time daily.
• Must pass a physical examination.

The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees.
