The Work You Will Do:

Sign Shop Specialist, Sign Shop Maintenance

This position will:

Perform a variety of shop functions based on production needs, including preparing substrate materials, operating machinery to size and finish sign blanks, and applying sheeting. It includes preparing and using silk screens, drying and washing screens, and packaging completed signs for shipping. Responsibilities also include assembling handmade signs, laying out mileage and destination signage, handling materials with a forklift, producing delineators and construction signs, and maintaining the shop and its equipment.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Perform any of the three (3) separate functions of the shop depending upon need and production requirements.

Prepare substrate materials for sign blanks for sizing blanks, shearing material to size, rounding corners, either by hand or machine; set-up and punch mounting holes; set-up and operate squeeze roller and apply sheeting to blanks.

Prepare silk screens by using either one arm squeegee or operate the semi-automatic squeegee in the silk screen process and set-up screens. Place finished screened signs in drying racks and wash used screens when finished. Extract signs from racks by quantities on requisitions and pack for shipping. Place slip sheeting between each sign and bind signs to pallets with strapping. Load signs on trucks using forklift.

Prepare and build handmade signs by placing cut letters and symbols on sign blanks and stacking completed signs to await shipment. Lay out mileage and destination signs using established criteria for size and letter placement.

Unload new material using forklift. Stack new materials by size and thickness.

Make delineators, screen mesh construction signs and produce other related items.

Clean and maintain shop grounds. Assist in the maintenance and repair of shop equipment.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Roadway signage
  • Sign manufacturing process and operations
  • Proper equipment and techniques for various tasks
  • Silk screening process

Skills in:

  • Silk screening process
  • The use of machinery and equipment (punch press, shear, hand and power tools, and forklift)
  • Placing cut out letters and symbols on sign blanks
  • Handling multiple tasks
  • Filling requested order
  • Meeting deadlines

Ability to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Load and unload and store stock
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Maintain cleanliness of department facility

Other Job-Related Requirements:

  • This position will be required to respond before, during and following emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Obtain a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
