Purpose/Description

In the Department of Public Services, the Sign Painter creates signs that meet the Michigan Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards

Required Tasks

  • Operate Sign Fabrication programs on the desk top computer, send finished sign designs to computer-controlled reflective sheeting cutter.
  • Lay out 3M sheeting material on stamped aluminum sign blanks, or plastic-coated plywood.
  • Hand-apply sheeting to blanks.
  • Trim excess sheeting from sign blanks or plywood.
  • Operate motorized sign roller or a manual-powered sign roller.
  • Operate highway roller to apply sheeting to blanks.
  • Operate motorized sign screening machine. Create images on silk screens for screening various signs.
  • Keep a surplus of materials needed to perform daily duties and an accurate list of needed supplies.
  • Maintain inventory the available signs in the sign shop stock supplies and keep organized.
  • Layout signs described verbally or written.
  • Operate Gerber computer outline and letter cutter.
  • Make and set up masters for screening.
  • Other related tasks and special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational/Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a sign shop assisting in the sign production process; OR
  • Satisfactorily completion of two (2) years of drafting in high school, college or vocational technical training
  • A valid state of Michigan Driver's CDL license with an “A” or “B” and "N" and air brake endorsement and an acceptable, safe driving record with no more than 7 points (Must obtain "A" within six months of employment. Time extension may be given at discretion of Management.) AND
  • DOT medical credentials as required by the State of Michigan for CDL drivers

TYPES OF TESTS An Assessment Center Examination will make up (100%) of score for ranking on the Eligibility List and will consist of a Performance test and an Oral Interview.
