Academy of Art University is seeking a Shop Technician for the School of Jewelry and Metal Arts for the Fall and Spring semesters. Shop Technicians work directly with students, faculty, and staff on a variety of matters that ensure efficient and effective utilization of resources within the University's labs, equipment facilities and shop spaces.

Responsibilities:

  • Train and provide for the safety of all students using the Jewelry and Metal Arts studios and shops.
  • Support a diverse student body as well as faculty with general questions regarding shop space and projects.
  • Monitor safety in Jewelry and Metal Arts studios and shops and communicate important safety practices.
  • Attend safety meetings pertaining to the Jewelry and Metal Arts department and the University at large.
  • Perform general maintenance, simple construction and fabrication as assigned.
  • Issue and recover tools for students and instructors.
  • Basic knowledge of small tools, their care and use.
  • Specific tools used: drill press, flex shaft, buffer, grinder, sander, acetylene/air torch, natural gas/oxy torch.
  • Casting: steamer & vulcanizer
  • Basic mold making
  • Process: small-scale fabrication, casting, wax working (sawing, soldering, cold connections, polishing/finishing.
  • Regularly inventory shop tools and supplies.
  • Perform special projects and assist with other tasks as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must have working knowledge of a variety of jewelry fabrication tools, techniques, and equipment.
  • Welding experience is a plus!
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills and be safety-minded always.
  • Must have a friendly and patient personality and enjoy working with a diverse student population.
  • Must be able to consistently lift up to 70lbs.

Pay: $24.00/hour

Benefits: Academy of Art University offers medical benefits for Technicians that work on a full-time basis. Part-time and full-time Technicians may also attend one tuition-free undergraduate class per semester. Part-time and full-time Technicians also accrue paid sick leave, may enroll for a tax-free commuter program and a 401k program.
