GFL Environmental is seeking a skilled, leadership-minded Shop Supervisor to organize daily workflow, mentor technicians, and ensure high-quality, efficient equipment repairs. Operating under limited supervision, the ideal candidate is a Red Seal/Journeyman technician who will work closely with the Fleet Manager to oversee shop operations, drive team accountability, and lead project initiatives. While this is a technical advisory position rather than a hands-on repair role, the supervisor must possess deep diagnostic knowledge to successfully guide, support, and develop the shop team.
Key Job Duties
Leadership & Team Operations
● Workflow & Training: Organize the daily workflow of your assigned shift. Assist in orienting, training, assigning tasks to, and evaluating the work of skilled technicians, providing active technical guidance and troubleshooting mentorship on complex mechanical issues.
● Safety Culture: Promote and maintain a safe work environment by ensuring all team members adhere to safety protocols, wear proper PPE, and keep work areas clean and orderly.
● Leadership Traits: Strong capability to prioritize workshop tasks within a set budget, maintain a high degree of patience, offer constructive criticism, and foster cooperative working relationships.
● Daily Huddles: Hold energetic and informative morning and afternoon huddles with the team to align on daily goals, safety, and priorities.
● Project Management: Take the lead on specialized shop projects; successfully organize execution and report the final results back to leadership.
● Work closely with the Fleet Manager to optimize shop efficiency and
maintain alignment with company operational standards.
Accountability & Compliance
● Quality Assurance: Review completed repair orders to ensure work meets GFL quality and safety standards before equipment is returned to service.
● Warranty Support: Work collaboratively with the Parts Technician to ensure correct warranty procedures are followed and tracked through to completion to maximize fleet compliance and cost recovery.
Technical Guidance & Mentorship
● Diagnostic Leadership & Technical Oversight: Serve as the subject matter expert and primary technical advisor for the shop. Provide deep diagnostic expertise across fuel, ignition, cooling, mechanical, suspension, drive train, engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems to help technicians isolate complex failures.
● Technical Guidance & Mentorship: Actively guide, coach, and mentor shop
technicians through intricate repair procedures and troubleshooting processes, helping them build their skills rather than performing the physical repairs yourself.
● Service Manual & Technical Support: Read, interpret, and explain complex service manuals, technical service bulletins (TSBs), and schematics to assist other technicians in executing accurate and efficient repairs.
● S oftware Documentation & Compliance: Direct the proper use of fleet maintenance software programs to ensure accurate and timely completion of required paperwork (such as DVIRs and M5 work orders). Oversee the precise documentation of repairs, parts utilization, and labor hours.
Experience & Certifications
● Trade Certification: Valid Red Seal or Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic certification (or equivalent relevant trade qualification).
● Industry Experience: Proven experience working in a heavy equipment or
medium/heavy truck fleet environment. Previous leadership or supervisory experience is highly preferred.
● Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (air brake endorsement or commercial license is an asset).
Skills & Tools
● Diagnostic Proficiency: Proficient with advanced electronic diagnostic scan tools, laptop diagnostic software, and specialty fleet troubleshooting programs to isolate issues and guide technicians.
● Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively translate complex technical data to technicians, management, and parts personnel.
Physical & Soft Skills
● Physical Presence: Ability to safely navigate an active maintenance shop environment daily. Must maintain the mobility required to inspect heavy equipment alongside technicians, work safely around heavy machinery, and provide technical oversight directly at the vehicle or repair bay.
● Leadership Traits: Strong capability to prioritize workshop tasks within a set budget, maintain a high degree of patience, offer constructive feedback to developing technicians, and foster a collaborative, safety-first working relationship.
