Job Description

Shift Supervisor - Smarr Combined Cycle

Location: Forsyth, Georgia

Oglethorpe Power is preparing to staff its new Smarr Combined Cycle Energy Facility, with commercial operations planned for 2029. We will soon begin recruiting experienced Shift Supervisors to help build the operations team, support commissioning, and lead safe, reliable generation at this new facility and the adjacent Smarr Peaking Plant.

If you have power plant operations and supervisory experience-particularly in combined-cycle or other thermal generation environments-we invite you to share your resume now for early consideration.

Oglethorpe Power is building the future of reliable energy in Georgia. We are seeking experienced Shift Supervisors to help prepare, commission, and operate the new Smarr Combined Cycle (CC) Energy Facility while supporting the adjacent, operating Smarr Peaking Plant.

Smarr CC is a 1,425 MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle facility scheduled to begin commercial operations in June 2029. This is a rare opportunity to join the operations team early, help establish the standards and operating culture for a new plant, and play a hands-on role in bringing major generating assets online safely and successfully.

Role Snapshot

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Shift Supervisor leads safe, reliable, and efficient day-to-day plant operations across Smarr CC and the Smarr Peaking Plant. This is a working supervisor role: you will lead and develop operations personnel while remaining actively involved in field work, control room activities, plant start-ups and shutdowns, troubleshooting, and operational decision-making.

What You'll Do

  • Lead daily operations activities, including scheduling, manpower utilization, work coordination, control room operations, and plant start-ups and shutdowns.
  • Direct, coach, and inspect the work of operations personnel while maintaining a strong focus on safe work practices, quality, and operational excellence.
  • Lead Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities and ensure equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and system issues; coordinate closely with Maintenance to restore reliable plant operations.
  • Support the use of Maximo or similar work-management processes to plan and execute maintenance work effectively.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve operating procedures, ensuring they reflect sound operating practices and current plant conditions.
  • Build operations capability by coordinating technical and developmental training, including formal progression and on-the-job training.
  • Champion compliance with applicable safety, environmental, reliability, and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, EPA, NERC/SERC, and other governing standards.
  • Serve as a visible safety leader, conduct safety observations, and provide constructive feedback to employees and contractors.
  • Communicate daily plant status, work plans, EH&S concerns, and emerging needs to plant personnel, leadership, and internal partners.
  • Support project work, contractor oversight, strategic planning, and budget activities as needed.
  • Maintain required control room qualifications and competencies for both facilities.

What You Bring

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible power plant operations experience-including nuclear, coal, or gas-fired generation-with demonstrated supervisory capability.

Equivalent combinations include:

  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field plus six years of progressively responsible thermal generation operations and maintenance experience; or
  • Two years of college or technical school in a related technology program plus eight years of progressively responsible thermal generation operations and maintenance experience.
  • Rotating-shift and control room experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of power plant fundamentals, operating dynamics, equipment troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
  • Experience with LOTO and the ability to establish appropriate isolation parameters.
  • Familiarity with Maximo or a comparable work-management system.
  • The judgment to make sound, timely decisions in high-stress or critical operating conditions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, and other operating documentation.
  • A valid driver's license that meets Oglethorpe Power's driver qualification requirements.

Work Environment and Schedule

This position supports a 24/7 generation operation and requires rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, standby duty, and on-call response for plant emergencies or operational needs. The role involves work in an industrial setting, including exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, humidity, machinery, chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.

Candidates must be able to perform plant inspections and operational work, including climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights and in confined spaces, standing for extended periods, and lifting up to 75 pounds. A physical and respirator fit test are required. Limited travel, up to 10%, may be required.

Oglethorpe Power is an equal opportunity employer.
