The Shift Captain is the front-line supervisor for his/her shift. The Shift Captain serves as the primary point of contact for field-level personnel on his/her shift. The Shift Captain is responsible for all the duties of an EMT/Paramedic outlined in Amerimed EMS SOP and all duties and responsibilities outlined below. The Shift Captain works closely with the Division Manager to communicate all aspects of daily EMS Operations on their given shift.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Daily duties for the Shift Captain may consist of but are not limited to:

• Assisting the Division Manager with ensuring all staff are in compliance with all company Standard Operating Procedures and As It Should Be (AISB) standards at all times.
• Coordinating the scheduling of emergency medical systems personnel and operations.
• Assisting the Division Manager with the onboarding of new field associates. The Shift Captain’s primary role during onboarding is to function as a Field Training Officer (FTO) to host new associates during their third rides.
• Alerting the Division Manager of any associate certifications in need of renewal to maintain compliance with company and industry standards.
• Handling employee issues/behaviors and issuing corrective action as needed (with prior approval of Division Manager). If corrective action goes beyond verbal warning, the Shift Captain should escalate the issue to the appropriate Division Manager for issuance.
• Providing documentation to the Division Manager to assist with annual performance evaluations for field staff.
• Demonstrating the ability to write and verbalize goals, objectives, and document outcomes pertaining to operational directives given by the Division Manager.
• Individuals must have strong, effective interpersonal skills and be able to teach and develop field level associates.
• Shift Captains must be able to work independently and demonstrate the ability to reinforce organization/company mission, vision, and goals and objectives to achieve desired outcomes.
• Individuals should have knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, and procedures.
• Shift Captains must be committed to AISB standards, divisional, and operational goals and KPIs while maintaining a strong focus on patient-centered clinical and customer service.
• Shift Captains must be creative, flexible, and innovative in adapting to operational goals and objectives as communicated by the Division Manager.
• Shift Captains will be expected to communicate regularly with the Division Manager on daily operations.
• Shift Captains will be expected to keep accurate documentation of KPIs for their shift and provide a detailed pass-along report to their relief.
• Facilitating reconciliation rather than divisiveness among individuals. The Shift Captain should focus on unity to achieve our shared organizational mission.
• Communicating regularly with field personnel to address problems or concerns to promote a culture of inclusion.
• Operating an emergency vehicle with due regard for other motorists while following all regulations and laws.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist the Division Manager by:

• Delivering written and oral communication, responding to questions and concerns from field personnel, and producing specific outcomes.
• Communicating regularly with other Shift Captains and the Division Manager to ensure consistency of daily operations.
• Monitoring all transport activities within your division. This includes monitoring radio traffic, CAD activity, and maintaining awareness of resources from neighboring divisions to ensure the most efficient deployment of resources and response to requests for transport.
• Assisting Medcomm in the setting up of Intercepts to ensure operational efficiency and timing. The Shift Captain should alert the Division Manager of any call involving their own unit to remove themselves from any perception of favoritism or avoidance of calls.
• Reconciling all paperwork for patients transported daily within your respective division. Updating the recon log daily to reflect corrections, rejections, or paperwork issues. Communicating with crew members who need remedial training on proper Patient Care Report documentation.
• Reviewing Daily Rig Checks to ensure compliance. The Shift Captain should alert the Division Manager of any deficiencies and assist with a plan to correct them.
• Documenting Non-Productive time, with reasoning, for the Division Manger to review.
• Ensuring daily scheduling needs are documented properly. Document all Sick, PTO, Bereavement, or other scheduling needs. Focus on Full-time scheduling using Part time used to supplement as needed. Review, approve, or deny time-off requests.
• Individuals should attend training classes to maintain national certification, state licensure, trade, and education conferences, and keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.

Education and

Experience:

• Must hold a valid State EMS License at the EMT, EMT-I, AEMT, or Paramedic level (Paramedic Preferred).
• Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record.
• High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous supervisory or management experience preferred, but not mandatory. 2-3 years of EMS experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to talk constantly, both in person and on the phone.
• Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: patient care activities, preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection of small writing and/or operation of office machines and EMS related equipment.
• Must be able to speak English constantly.
• Must be able to read English. Must be able to remain in a stationary position constantly (approximately 80% of the time)
• Must be able to type or write constantly (approximately 15% of the time)
• Must be able to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Must be able to occasionally move about in the ambulance to access the patient, provide patient care and retrieve and use equipment.
• Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, postage meter, phone, scanner, fax machine and computer printer.
• Ability to operate EMS equipment such as blood pressure cuff, glucometer, EKG machine, pulse oximeter, etc.
• Frequently communicates with patients, EMS providers, hospital and facility staff. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
• Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, push, pull, reaching, lifting, squat, twist, carrying and climb stairs to access a patient and or equipment inside cramped spaces such as the back of an ambulance.
• Must be able to routinely lift more than 200 lbs. with assistance, from ground level to move or manipulate a patient, on backboard or load a patient and stretcher into an ambulance.
• Must be able to grasp paperwork and or small equipment such as glucose test strips.
